UEFA Intertoto Cup 2007

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Standard division of the clubs into three groups. In 2007 there were three deviations from this breakdown.

For the 2007 UEFA Intertoto Cup , 50 nations were each allowed to send one team into the competition. Eleven places were played in three rounds for the second qualifying round of the 2007/08 UEFA Cup .

The associations Liechtenstein, Andorra and San Marino do not have a regular place in the UI Cup. Andorra lost its regular place from 2006 to the new, 53rd Association of Montenegro, as UEFA still only tolerates 50 participants in the UI Cup. After Scotland and Norway decided not to participate, the two vacancies were reassigned by UEFA. According to the statutes, an association may field a maximum of one second participant in such a case. Andorra got a starting place, and Romania was allowed to offer a second participant.

The associations that occupy the top places in the UEFA five-year ranking only entered the competition later. The ranking positions one to eight only play the final third round, those of the positions nine to 22 play the second and third round. Seats that become free due to the waiver are filled according to the ranking list, so that additional starters generally play in the first round (this rule was deviated from in 2006 when Italy voluntarily withdrew its UI Cup participation at very short notice due to the league scandal there, and AJ Auxerre ( FRA) just like Olympique Marseille (FRA) only had to play the third UI Cup round).

In order to keep travel costs down for the clubs, all teams have been divided into three groups according to geographical and logistical reasons: Northern Europe, Central Europe and Southern Europe. In order to compensate for the uneven number of participants in the groups, the following changes applied to the 2007 competition: Luxembourg (from round 1) and Greece (from round 3) belonged to Central Europe and Poland (from round 2) belonged to Northern Europe.

1 The game was abandoned and Vėtra Vilnius scored 3-0, as hundreds of Legia Warsaw supporters stormed the pitch during half-time (score 2-0) and fought with the police. Legia Warsaw was later excluded from the current and one other international competition by UEFA.

The third UI Cup round took place on 21./22. July (first leg) and July 28/29. July (second leg). The 11 teams that emerged victorious took part in the 2007/08 UEFA Cup second qualifying round .
