history

The history of professional football in the second largest city in the Republic of Ireland is rich in national successes, but also very confusing due to numerous name changes, bankruptcies and start-ups.

After the Cork Hibernians in 1976 , Cork Celtic in 1979 and Cork United in 1982 , the city was suddenly no longer represented in professional football. For this reason, Cork City FC was founded in 1984 and immediately accepted into the top Irish league, the League of Ireland .

In the 1938/39 season, a club of the same name had already fought for points in the top division as the direct successor of Cork FC or Fordson United FC . However, the club was renamed Cork United a year later .

In the first few years the new Cork City FC was not very successful. So in the 1985/86 season not a single home win and relegation to the First Division called second division could only be avoided by a goal difference to Shelbourne FC that was one goal better . A first major success was in 1988, the first of three victories (1988, 1995, 1999) in the League of Ireland League Cup . Then things went up in terms of sport. From 1991 to 1994 Cork City was one of the top three Irish teams, in 1993 the club became champions for the first time and subsequently reached the first main round of the European Cup. First was played in the qualifying round against the Welsh team Cwmbran Town . While they lost the first leg with 3-2 goals, the second leg in the home stadium could be won 2-1. Due to the away goals rule, Cork City FC reached the first main round with 4: 4 goals. There the CCFC played against the top Turkish team Galatasaray Istanbul . The game in Istanbul was lost 2-1, in the second leg there was a 0-1 defeat. In 1998 he won the Irish Cup in two finals against Shelbourne FC. In 2007 the triumph could be repeated with a 1-0 win over Longford Town .

Cork City - Crvena Zvezda, 2006

After Ireland had adjusted the hosting time of the championship to the calendar years in 2003, Cork City was runner-up in 2004 and was able to win the championship again in 2005.

With Roy O'Donovan, Cork is the most expensive transfer change in the history of the Eircomleague. The talented young striker moved to the English first division club Sunderland in 2007 for 500,000 euros .

On November 1, 2008, the club was able to prevail in a thrilling final of the Setanta Sports Cup against Glentorane with 2-1 goals, after Cork City was still 0-1 at halftime.
