Until 1983, the team was a pure amateur team of students from Dublin University, despite participating in the game of the Irish professional league, and even after the opening of the first team, a large proportion of the players are made up of students and alumni of the university. Players have always had the opportunity to acquire a university degree in addition to playing football. For example, the multiple Irish minister and presidential candidate in 1990 Brian Lenihan played during his studies at UCD in the 1950s .

history

UCD was founded in 1895 as the Catholic University Medical School Cecilia Street Football Club at the still independent Catholic University Medical School , after its incorporation into the newly formed University College Dublin , UCD was renamed. A first major success was winning the University Championships of Ireland in 1914. A year after the founding of the League of Ireland , UCD was already accepted into it together with the Shamrock Rovers in 1922 , but because most of the players were still in the semester break at the beginning of the season and therefore no team could be called up before the start of the Game operations are excluded again. The next opportunity for admission to the top division was only offered more than half a century later.

In 1935, UCD moved into Belfield Park, which was used as their home ground until the beginning of the current season. Since then, the “UCD Bowl” has been played in the new stadium, which is also used by the university's rugby team.

In 1970 UCD rose to what was then the League of Ireland B , the highest amateur class in Ireland. The team now had some class, so in the early 1970s the later 70-time Irish international Kevin Moran played in college dress. This resulted in UCD doing invitational tours, mostly in Asia, often until the 1980s.

At the end of the 1970s there was also a big boom for UCD; when a team from Cork went bankrupt in 1978, the League of Ireland UCD offered the vacated starting place in the league. In the first few years, UCD was unsuccessful and was never able to finish the season better than fourth from last of 16 places. In 1983, the rule that only current students could be considered in the team was therefore lifted. Success immediately came in the form of winning the 1983/84 cup. 1984/85 succeeded the fourth place in the Irish championship, but a year later the relegation from the Premier to the First Division followed with only eight points. In 1989 one rose, but in 1990 immediately again. It was not until 1995 that UCD was able to establish itself again in the House of Lords. In 2003 UCD was relegated again, but rose again in the same year 2003 due to the changeover from the season to calendar years.

The women of the UCD participate with two different teams in both the WSCAI Premier Division , the top division for university women's teams , and the DWSL (Dublin Womens Soccer League) Premier League , the top division for normal women's teams in the west of Ireland. After the period during which both the competitions WSCAI team is Winter team and the DWSL Frauenschaft summer team called, the summer team is also mainly formed of the current or former students of the UCD.

The first official female football team at University College Dublin was founded in 1966/67, but only appeared in the first two Inzetvarsity cup , a trophy competition for the Irish university cup for women’s teams, in 1983 and 1984 , when the team only lost in the final. Since 1992 plays in the top division of the university league, in which three championships could be won in the 1990s; the 1994/95 season could even be concluded without losing points or conceding a goal.

In 2002 the summer team was founded to take part in the regular competitions for women. In the first three years of existence, the Irish Republic's Women's Cup could be won. In addition, the team became champions four times in a row between 2003 and 2006.

These successes qualified UCD for participation in the UEFA Women's Cup in 2003, 2004 and 2005 , but where the Dublin players were always eliminated in the first round.
