Kevin Moran (born April 29, 1956 in Dublin ) is a former Irish football player who played in defense . He gained notoriety for the fact that on May 18, 1985, in the 104th FA Cup final, he became the first player to be sent off in a final of this competition.

Life

society

In his youth, Moran practiced both "English" football and the Irish version and later placed the emphasis on "soccer", especially since Gaelic football is only operated on an amateur basis.

Moran began his soccer career in the 1975/76 season at his hometown club Bohemians FC and then moved to neighboring Pegasus FC, where he was discovered by talent scouts from Manchester United FC and soon afterwards committed. His first appearance for the "Red Devils" played Moran on April 30, 1979 in a game against Southampton FC .

But it was only after Ron Atkinson took over as head coach at ManU in 1981 that Moran became a regular. In the ten years that he was under contract with the Red Devils, Moran completed a total of 289 appearances and scored 24 goals. His greatest successes in this decade include the two cup wins in 1983 and 1985 , with the second final on May 18, 1985 against Everton FC making a significant contribution to the fact that he is remembered. After a bad pass in the Red Devils' build-up game, Everton player Peter Reid ran alone towards the United goal guarded by Gary Bailey when Moran tried to stop him as the last man, but instead of the ball only hit the opponent, who with a spectacular Flight over Moran fell. As a result, Moran was sent off, and because it was the first ever expulsion in an FA Cup final, Moran went down in the history of the competition. In the end, Moran was still able to celebrate as United won the match 1-0 with a goal from Norman Whiteside in extra time.

After a two-year engagement with the Spanish Sporting Gijón in the late 1980s, Moran ended his career in the 1990s in the ranks of the Blackburn Rovers , with whom he was promoted to the newly formed Premier League in 1992 and with whom he was in his final season in 1993/94 Was runner-up behind his former club Manchester United.

National team

Between 1980 and 1994 Moran completed a total of 71 international appearances for the Irish national team , in which he scored six goals.

One of the highlights of his national team career was, among other things, his participation in the European Championship in Germany in 1988 , in which he played all three games in Ireland. Although the Irish did not survive the group stage, the tournament was a success for them. They reached third place in Group 2, ahead of arch-rivals England , who were sensationally defeated 1-0 in the opening game.

Another highlight was participation in the 1990 World Cup in Italy , where Ireland made it to the quarter-finals, where they lost to hosts Italy (0-1). Moran played all five games in his home country, remained unbeaten this time against England (1-1) and was also able to prevail against the reigning European champions Netherlands , against whom they had failed two years earlier.

Further career

After finishing his active career, he founded the football agency Proactive Sports Management , which represents the United stars Wayne Rooney and Andy Cole , among others . He also worked for the television station TV3.
