UEFA Champions League 2015/16
The St. Jakob-Park was the venue for the final.

The 2015/16 UEFA Europa League was the 45th edition of the second most important competition for European football clubs , which was held under the name of the UEFA Cup until the 2008/09 season. 191 clubs from all 54 national associations of UEFA took part in the competition this season .

The season began with the first leg of the first qualifying round on June 30, 2015 and ended with the final on May 18, 2016 in Basel's St. Jakob-Park . Here, Sevilla FC won the title for the third time in a row with a 3-1 win against Liverpool.

As usual, the winner qualified for the 2016 UEFA Super Cup with this victory and was given a starting place in the following UEFA Champions League season.

Changes to the preseason

  • 16 teams from the top 12 nations will certainly take part in the group stage (previously 6 teams from the top 6 nations).
  • Each nation is only allowed to send a maximum of three teams (plus any CL relegated and fair play winners) to the Europa League (previously four teams in places 7 to 9)
  • If the cup winner qualifies for the UEFA Champions League, the next team from the league will get the worst possible starting place (previously cup finalist).

qualification

In the draw for each individual round, the teams are placed in two pots according to their respective club coefficient 2015 (KK), so that each seeded team (higher coefficient) competes against an unset (lower coefficient).

  4. Number of away goals in direct comparison
  5. If, after applying criteria 1-4, two or more teams still occupy the same place in the table, criteria 1-4 are reapplied for these teams. If this does not result in a definitive placement, criteria 6–12 will be applied.
  6. Goal difference from all group matches
  7. higher number of goals scored
  8. higher number of away goals scored
