Nathaniel Edwin Clyne (born April 5, 1991 in London - Stockwell ) is an English football player .

Career

In the club

Crystal Palace

Clyne, who grew up in socially difficult circumstances in the south London borough of Lambeth , found his "way off the street" at a young age to the non-profit organization Afewee, which was founded by volunteers . There he found support and quickly demonstrated his footballing talent. He was initially a pure "winger" and at the age of ten he presented himself to the youth academy of Arsenal FC . The "Gunners", however, classified him as "too small". Southampton FC

Clyne signed a four-year contract with Southampton FC and made his Premier League debut at Manchester City (2-3) on August 19, 2012 . Around a month later, he scored his first goal in the top English division in a 4-1 home win against Aston Villa . In the following years, Clyne established himself in the up-and-coming team of Southampton FC, which from the 2013/14 season even surprisingly established itself in the top half of the table. Thanks to his consistently good performance, he also developed into an English national player and a transfer object that is coveted by top English clubs.

Liverpool FC

For the 2015/16 season , Clyne moved to Liverpool . In his first season he was a regular player in the right- back position under Brendan Rodgers and his successor Jürgen Klopp . He played 33 Premier League games (all from the start) in which he scored a goal. In the Europa League , Clyne only missed one group game and made 14 appearances (all from the start) on the way to the final, in which they had to admit defeat to FC Sevilla . Also in the 2016/17 season , Clyne was a regular under Klopp and played 37 league games (all from the start). In preparation for the 2017/18 season , he suffered a back injury with which he was out until the end of March. During his absence, Trent Alexander-Arnold established himself as a lawyer. Clyne only made 3 league appearances (2 times from the start). Liverpool FC reached the final of the Champions League , in which they were defeated by Real Madrid . However, Clyne was not used in the Champions League season. Also in the first half of the 2018/19 season Alexander-Arnold von Klopp was preferred as a right-back. Clyne therefore only made 4 league appearances (one time from the start).

Bournemouth AFC and return to Liverpool

In early January 2019, Clyne moved to league rivals AFC Bournemouth on loan until the end of the season . He came to the end of the season under the head coach Eddie Howe on 14 league appearances (13 times from the start). In his absence, Liverpool won the Champions League.

For the season 2019/20 returned Clyne back to Liverpool. In preparation, he tore a cruciate ligament during the friendly against Borussia Dortmund . He therefore did not appear in any competitive game during the entire season. Liverpool FC became English champions for the first time since 1990 .

In the national team

Between September 8, 2009 and July 27, 2010, Nathaniel Clyne played nine international matches for the England U19 national team . From July 18 to 30, 2010 he took part with England in the U-19 European Football Championship 2010 in France and played all four games before England lost 3-1 to Spain in the semi-finals. On November 10, 2011 he made his debut in the English U21 national team in a 5-0 home win over Iceland and until June 2013 he played a total of eight games for the U-21 youth.

His debut for the English senior team took place on November 15, 2014 as part of the European Championship qualification against Slovenia . The game ended in a 3-1 win and Clyne formed the four-man defensive chain of the "Three Lions" with central defenders Gary Cahill and Phil Jagielka and Kieran Gibbs on the left. On the occasion of Euro 2016 in France , he played a game in the group stage against Slovakia . When he went 0-0, he prepared seven chances for his team to score - a record that no other English player had achieved in a final tournament since 1980. But it remained his only appearance in the team that was eliminated in the round of 16 against Iceland.
