London Borough Lambeth

Stockwell is a district of London and is located in the Borough of Lambeth , in the southwest of the city. The boroughs of Brixton , Clapham , Vauxhall and Kennington border Stockwell. Stockwell was once one of the poorest neighborhoods in London, but is now booming due to its proximity to the city center and good transport links.

history

The name of the district goes back to the Old English stoc , as a name for a tree stump or stake. The second part of the name is likely derived from a local source (Old English: wella ). In the late 13th century, the English King Edward I acquired the South Lambeth estate and divided it into the Stockwell and Vauxhall estates .

Stockwell remained a rural estate on the outskirts of London until the beginning of the 19th century. It comprised kitchen gardens and the botanical garden of John Tradescant the Elder and his son and was also the location of the Musaeum Tradescantianum . The “Tradescant Road” and a sculpture in front of St. Stephens Church are reminiscent of the Tradescants. The oldest surviving structures in Stockwell are St. Andrew's Church (approx. 1767) and Stockwell Congregational Church (approx. 1798). The New Queen's Head on Stockwell Road also dates from the late 18th century.

Before the County of London was created with the Local Government Act in 1889 , Stockwell belonged to the county of Surrey .

In the 19th century, the district developed into an elegant, medium-sized residential area. The residents included the illustrator Arthur Rackham (1867-1939), who was born on South Lambeth Road and moved to Albert Square with his family at the age of 15 .

The architecture and social structure of the district developed very differently in the 20th century. The immediate vicinity of Stockwell Station on the London Underground was extensively rebuilt after the Second World War. The station building from 1890 was initially replaced by a low-rise building in the 1920s. In 1971, in the course of the construction of the Victoria Line , which crosses the Northern Line in Stockwell , the new station building was built. Today's station building is a functional building clad with clinker bricks, dominated by a ventilation shaft and housing a few small shops on the ground floor.

Social housing is abundant in the borough , the main ones being Lansdowne Green, Stockwell Park, Studley, Spurgeon, Mursell and Stockwell Gardens. There are also old houses from the 19th century in the back streets of Stockwell, especially in the Stockwell Park Conservation Area . Most of these homes were constructed between 1825 and 1840 and are concentrated on Stockwell Park Road, Stockwell Park Crescent, Durand Gardens, and Albert Square. The only architecturally significant building of the 20th century is the Stockwell Bus Garage , a reinforced concrete bus shed on the London Underground from the early 1950s.

One of the attractions is The Type Museum , a museum established in 1995 on the past and present of typography , with letters, historical printing presses and other objects on display.

Stockwell is a constituency in the London Borough of Lambeth . Since the May 6, 2010 election, he has been represented by three Labor Party councilors: Alex Bigham, Pete Bowyer and Imogen Walker.

population

Stockwell and neighboring South Lambeth are home to one of the largest Portuguese communities in the United Kingdom, so the area is also known as Little Portugal . Most of the residents of Portuguese origin come from Madeira or Lisbon , and numerous cafes, restaurants, bakeries, delicatessens and neighborhood clubs in the district bear witness to their origins. The above-average proportion of residents of Caribbean or West African origin can also be seen in the cafés, greengrocers and hairdressers they operate.

In addition to the Anglican and Catholic churches, a number of African American denominations influence religious life in the Stockwell neighborhood. Some of these communities share church rooms with the longer resident Anglican and Catholic communities.

Well-known past and present residents of Stockwell include Vincent van Gogh (briefly), the British agent Violette Szabo , who was murdered in the Ravensbrück concentration camp , the actors Roger Moore , Gary Raymond and Joanna Lumley , the musicians Jerry Dammers , Roots Manuva and Dot Rotten , the comedians Adam Buxton and Joe Cornish , the footballer Nathaniel Clyne , and the writer and journalist Will Self .

Events

On July 7, 2005, there was a series of serious bomb attacks on local transport facilities in London . A series of similar but unsuccessful attacks followed on July 21. On July 22, 2005, the Brazilian electrician Jean Charles de Menezes was deliberately shot in the head in the Stockwell subway station by plainclothes police officers who mistook him for one of the wanted assassins.

Between April and July 1986, serial killer Kenneth Erskine killed at least seven elderly people, including at least four in Stockwell. Therefore, he was referred to in the media as the Stockwell Strangler (German: Stockwell-Würger ).
