Roots Manuva

Roots Manuva , real name Rodney Hylton Smith , (born September 9, 1972 in London ) is a British hip-hop artist. His style is characterized by a mixture of hip-hop with reggae and dub , with strong influences from electronic music .

Live and act

Smith grew up in the Stockwell district in the London Borough of Lambeth in south London . His parents come from the small village of Banana Hole in Jamaica , where his father was a preacher.

In 1994 he first used the name Roots Manuva. After a few smaller releases on various hip-hop labels, he was signed in 1997 by Big Dada, the hip-hop offshoot of the electronics label Ninja Tune . His debut album, Brand New Second Hand (1998) won the MOBO award for best hip-hop act. For Run Come Save Me (2001) he was nominated for the Mercury Prize .

Manuva is considered a forerunner of modern British hip-hop, including artists such as The Streets and Dizzee Rascal .

During his career he worked with Gorillaz , DJ Shadow , Leftfield , UNKLE and Massive Attack , among others .
