Ty (rapper)

Ty (born August 17, 1972 in London as Ben Chijioke ; † May 7, 2020 ) was a British rapper and music producer .

Chijioke was born in London to an immigrant family from Nigeria . In 1995 he made his debut on the I. G. Culture album One Drop Inter Outer . He has worked as a producer for several artists, including De La Soul and Talib Kweli . He accompanied them on their European tours and recorded songs with them.

In 2001 Ty's debut album Awkward was released. His second album Upwards, which was released three years later, was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize . He produced all the tracks on this album himself and did not make guest appearances. In 2006 his third album Closer was released, on which he worked with De La Soul and Arrested Development , among others .

With his events, such as the Lyrical Lounge, Ty also promoted young talents and offered them the opportunity to compete.

He died in May 2020 at the age of 47 from complications from COVID-19 .
