The three- toothed puffer fish ( Triodon macropterus ) or belly sac puffer fish is part of the monotypical family Triodontidae. It lives near the coast in the tropical Indo-Pacific from East Africa to the Philippines , Japan , Australia , New Caledonia and Tonga at depths of 50 to 300 meters.

Its jaws are covered with three teeth each. The dorsal and anal fin have eleven rays , the deeply forked caudal fin have twelve. Most specimens from Indonesia to Japan have a small dorsal fin with one or two hard rays. In contrast to the puffer fish (Tetraodontidae), ribs are present. The three-toothed puffer fish grows up to 54 centimeters long.

In addition to the one living today, a fossil species, Triodon antiquus from the Eocene , is known.
