biography

Leftfield, 2016

Leftfield landed their first mainstream hit with the 1993 Open Up , which was created in collaboration with John Lydon as a singer. The 1995 debut album Leftism , a completely new mix of dub , breakbeat and techno , was groundbreaking for modern electronica . Many electronics manufacturers were influenced by Leftism . The large number of Leftfield-inspired publications caused the British music press, above all DJ Magazine and Mixmag , to create a new genre name with its own record charts: Leftfield .

The second album, released in 1999, Rhythm And Stealth , kept a similar style but is more techno - especially Detroit techno and electro funk - influenced. Prominent guest vocalists were Afrika Bambaata and Roots Manuva . The music video for Afrika Shox , created in New York under the direction of Chris Cunningham , which impressively conveyed the dark mood of the track, became a classic. Rhythm And Stealth was nominated for the British Mercury Music Prize in 2000.

In 2002 the two musicians separated to pursue solo projects.

In 2005 another best-of album was released with the title A Final Hit - The Greatest Hits . On this both previous albums were found next to the most famous pieces, the two non-album singles Not Forgotten and More Than I Know and three other pieces not previously used, including the track Snake Blood , the leftfield for the soundtrack of the movie The Beach had produced . A DVD is included with the album, which contains all seven videos produced by Leftfield.

Some of their titles became known to a wider audience through advertising. For example, the intro of Release the Pressure was used for a commercial for the German telecommunications provider O 2 . The leftfield track Afro-Ride was also used in the PlayStation game wipEout . The track Phat Planet was used as the theme song for the series Transformers: Beast Machines .
