criticism

The Laut.de e-zine rated Duppy Writer with four out of a possible five points. From the point of view of the editor Alexander Engelen, the “meeting of Roots Manuva and Wrongtom [...] genre diffusion in perfection. “Because of his love for dub , Manuva has“ brought DJ and producer Wrongtom on board ”, who has already remixed “ some pieces by Manuva in a new dub aesthetic ” for Slime & Reason . Duppy Writer works like a “ time travel through very different epochs of reggae . Classic riddims , for example in Big Tings Redone , meet“ video game sounds that shoot into the future ”in Dutty Rut . On the other hand, “ deep in the stomach area burrowing reverb effects [...] change with the familiar eighties reggae vibe. “The greatest strength of the album is“ when Manuva's raps, such as on 'Son Of Booda', are congenial and precisely placed on the beats and virtually completely hide the reality of the inaccuracy of the remix album. "

In a review of the website Plattentests.de six out of ten evaluation points were given to Duppy Writer . According to Björn Bischoff, it is the “ completely unique sound ” that defines the album. Duppy Writer is chilling “ in his coolness. “Although for the album“ mostly only old numbers by Roots Manuva were [shredded] through the air and they ended up bubbling out of the water pipe in a new guise ”, the songs are“ as far removed from the original as possible. "So the" independence [...] is the decisive trump card that [Wrongtom] and Roots Manuva achieved with 'Duppy Writer' "". In summary, the album is “ too sophisticated ” and “ the effort that is put into it is too great to just go through as an interlude until the next Roots Manuva album. "
