The SIG / BBC Em 2/2 is a diesel-electric shunting locomotive for sidings. It was developed by Brown Boveri (BBC) in collaboration with the Schweizerische Industriegesellschaft Neuhausen am Rheinfall (SIG) and put into operation from 1959. Until 1967, however, only nine copies could be sold, three of them for the BBC's own use, three to siding owners and three to private railways.
history
As a successor to the diesel-electric Em 2/2 developed by BBC together with SLM in 1953/54, which was then procured by SBB as the Tm III depot tractor , BBC has now launched the Em 2/2 diesel-electric shunting locomotive together with the wagon builder SIG. Due to the higher performance, they were deliberately referred to as locomotives and not as tractors . This was also justified insofar as the locomotive was also used on a number of private railways in service.
After the commissioning of two locomotives at BBC in Birrfeld and Baden in 1959/60, the first locomotive was sold to the Zurzach soda factory. In 1961, the city of Bern acquired a locomotive for the city of Bern's gasworks railway, which has steep gradients (35 ‰), and the Wohlen-Meisterschwanden-Bahn (WM) the Em 2/2 101 to cope with the increasing freight traffic. The next locomotive was not delivered until 1964, again to BBC itself. Thereafter, each year another locomotive followed, in 1965 the Em 2/2 1 of the Sursee-Triengen-Bahn (ST), which reached a slightly higher maximum speed and initially also in passenger traffic was used. In 1966, the World Cup received the second Em 2/2 102 locomotive and in 1967 another locomotive was delivered to Roche in Sisseln.
While the locomotives delivered to private railways were given numbers, the siding locomotives only had names. Over the years all locomotives were given names. These remained the same even when the keeper changed and allow the nine locomotives to be reliably identified.
The locomotives were technically complex to manufacture, but of high quality, which is evident from the fact that eight of the nine locomotives are still in operation. The price, which in 1965 was 450,000 francs, was in line with the quality. That was more than double what had to be paid for one of the more powerful Tm IVs that came into operation from 1970 and also explains the low number of units.
technology
The locomotives received a Saurer six-cylinder diesel engine of the type SD with an hourly output of 330 hp (243 kW). It would have been possible to install a BBC exhaust gas turbocharger (440 hp (324 kW)) and charge air cooling (500 hp (368 kW)). But no use was made of this.
The diesel engine drives a type 506c BBC direct current generator, which is designed for 1400 A and 950 V at 1500 rpm. This drives the two externally ventilated paw bearing motors connected in series.
Related design
Three electric shunting locomotives were also manufactured on the basis of the mechanical part from SIG. However, with the same overall length, these were also given a full platform for the shunting personnel on the driver's cab side and the driver's cab door is on this side. The first locomotive was acquired by the Freiburg Railways in 1960 in order to be able to use the electrical equipment acquired for the planned conversion of railcar 154 in a meaningful way. Ten years later, the Orbe-Chavornay Railway (OC), electrified with direct current, purchased two locomotives, but they were electrically equipped by MFO.
