The Chemin de fer Orbe-Chavornay - abbreviated OC, German : Orbe-Chavornay-Bahn - is a former railway company and a railway line ; it was the first electric standard-gauge railway in Switzerland .
history
The Compagnie de l'Ouest Suisse trains had been traveling through the Orbe plain since May 1856 and stopped in Chavornay . The district capital Orbe, which is about four kilometers away, had no rail connection. When the industry there expanded with mills and a Nestlé factory, a suitable connection to the Swiss railway network had to be found. On April 17, 1894, the route from Orbe to Chavornay was opened. Since the route in front of the Orbe terminus rises at a short distance of 30 per thousand , the decision was made to use electric traction . One chose direct current with 750 volts . The three CFe 2/2 railcars initially obtained their electricity from the overhead contact line with roller pantographs , and their two motors developed 70 horsepower (51.5 kW ). Passenger traffic was modest, but the heavy freight traffic quickly demanded even more powerful locomotives. In 1902, a freight railcar that was twice as powerful was procured .
Today, Chemin de fer Orbe – Chavornay handles passenger traffic with a modern electric railcar , and freight traffic with two electric locomotives and one diesel locomotive .
On June 1, 2003, Travys took over the management of Chemin de fer Orbe-Chavornay and subsequently bought the shares of the Usines de l'Orbe (Orbe power plants, abbreviated to UO). The traction current is also obtained from these . In 2008 the company was fully integrated into the Travys through a merger.
