In the case of railways, vegetation control or vegetation care is the mechanical weed control in the track area as well as the cutting back of branches of trees and bushes protruding into the clearance profile .

For the related track maintenance specific to trains used even Sprengzug , Spritzzug , Unkrautsprengzug , Unkrautspritzzug , Unkrautzug , Unkrautbeseitigungszug , Unkrautvertilgungszug or Unkrautvernichtungszug called. The special trains are used for the concentrated application of herbicides so that the gravel bed does not become weed. The supplies of sprays are carried in special tank wagons , known as explosives . The speed driven is low so that the spray is not dispersed by air turbulence. Blasting trains are predominantly found on railways , but occasionally also on interurban trams or urban trams with a high proportion of their own tracks with Vignole rails . In Germany, for example, vegetation control using a blasting truck has been common practice since 1926.

In the case of electrified routes, the area around the overhead line must be kept clear so that the pantographs do not collide with branches. This also applies to trolleybus operators .
