Unlike passenger railcars, they are very rare because a high payload is desirable when transporting goods ; however, a drive installed in the same vehicle is at the expense of the payload. Special forms of freight railcars are baggage railcars or mail railcars . Freight railcars also often serve as towing cars for other freight cars .

In the past, railcars were mainly used on small and branch lines, especially on electrified lines . Examples of this are the freight railcars of the Lokalbahn Aktien-Gesellschaft ( LAG No. 891 and LAG No. 895 ) as well as the E 21 and E 22 of the Extertalbahn that have been preserved to this day . Sometimes they could also be found as freight trams in city traffic, for example in Hanover .
