history

CarGoTram in road traffic

Even during the planning of the Volkswagen factory, the question arose of how the individual components for the cars should be transported from the logistics center at Dresden-Friedrichstadt train station to the Transparent Factory at the Great Garden . Because the route runs directly through the city and you wanted to avoid transporting the components by truck , the decision was made to build two freight trams. According to a decision by the city council, these were now a requirement for the use of the Gläserne Manufaktur production site after massive protests against inner-city deliveries by truck.

Railcar

On March 3, 2000 these two trains were commissioned from Schalke Eisenhütte in Gelsenkirchen . At that time, a freight tram cost around 6.5 million German marks . A five-part freight tram was designed and built in just under a year. A special feature is that completely overhauled motor bogies from already decommissioned Tatra trams were used in the vehicles . The engines were supplied by the Sachsenwerk Niedersedlitz , the cabs came from Salzwedel. The transport companies provide the drivers and maintain the vehicles.

On November 16, 2000, the first vehicle was presented in the Trachenberge tram depot in Dresden . On January 3, 2001, the railway completed its first test runs on the Dresden route network. The CarGoTram has been running between the logistics center in Friedrichstadt and the Gläserne Manufaktur since 2001. They should commute 30 times a day on the 5.5 km long route, according to the prognosis before the opening of the factory. In 2003 the trams made a maximum of ten journeys. In 2015 it was an average of three a day.

With the end of the production of VW Phaeton and Bentley Flying Spur in the Gläserne Manufaktur in March 2016, the CarGoTram was also discontinued due to a lack of demand. One of the two trains was parked in the Volkswagen logistics yard , the other in the DVB depot in Trachenberge . The trains should be driven occasionally.

Since March 2017 the CarGoTram has been transporting parts for the assembly of the e-Golf to the Transparent Factory. In line with this, the appearance has been expanded to include the words “Here comes electrical charge”.

technology

The freight tram is designed as a bidirectional vehicle with a railcar at the front and rear. All axles are driven. A complete train can carry up to three truckloads, which corresponds to a load volume of 214 cubic meters.

The maximum payload per train is :

2 × 7.5 t ( Railcar )
+ 3 × 15 t ( Middle car )
60 t Total payload

The railcars were given the numbers 2001 to 2005 and the intermediate cars the numbers 2021 to 2027. The 2005 railcar and the 2027 intermediate car are kept as replacements.

As a rule,
three intermediate cars are hung between the two railcars .
