Life

His parents were Philipp IV von Falkenstein and Countess Johanna von Saar Werden . They decided early on that their son should become a cleric . At that time, however, children and young people who attended choir or monastery schools were also referred to as "domicellarius". From 1345 he was a scholaster at the cathedral school in Mainz and from 1348 to 1354 provost of the Mainz cathedral chapter . Kuno von Falkenstein was, as mentions of his person in various manuscripts show, a promoter of alchemy .

During the schism in the period from 1346 to 1353 he appeared as administrator of the Archbishopric of Mainz and was considered a supporter of the Archbishop of Mainz, Heinrich III. von Virneburg in his fight against his successor Gerlach von Nassau . He also made a name for himself with the aging Archbishop Boemund II of Trier from Saarbrücken , whom he supported as coadjutor from April 4, 1360 . After the death of Boemund II, Kuno II was appointed as his successor on May 27, 1362 and was ordained as Archbishop and Elector of Trier in autumn 1362.

In 1366 the Cologne Cathedral Chapter moved Archbishop Engelbert III of Cologne, who was almost incapable of office due to illness and age . to accept the appointment of Kuno II as coadjutor in the Archdiocese of Cologne. In addition, he was asked for assistance against the rebellious cities of Andernach and Linz on the Rhine . Even after Engelbert's death in 1368, Kuno remained caretaker of the Cologne archbishopric until 1370. He worked out that Friedrich III. von Saar Werden , the son of his cousin, became archbishop of Cologne in 1371. The Pope Urban VI. He turned down the cardinal dignity offered in 1384 . Not least thanks to his financial help, Friedrich III succeeded. von Saarwill provide decisive support.

In Trier he prevented predatory incursions by the Bretons into the archbishopric and successfully prevailed with his rejection of the imperial immediacy of the city of Trier. He was also able to book several territorial gains for the archbishopric. After 26 years of reign he abdicated in 1388 in favor of his nephew Werner von Falkenstein and died in the same year at Maus Castle and was buried in the Kastorkirche in Koblenz . He refused a burial in Trier because he hadn't resided there since 1377 because of disputes. His great-nephew Werner von Falkenstein became his successor.
