Hugo was allegedly the fourth son of the Count de Stephen II. Von Sponheim and his wife Sophie. His sister Jutta von Sponheim was the founder and first abbess of the Disibodenberg monastery . The agnatic affiliation to the Spanheimer gender is controversial. Friedrich Hausmann classifies him as the brother of Jutta and Meginhard von Sponheim .

Hugo was not documented until 1127 as a canon and dean of the cathedral in Cologne. At the same time he was provost of the Marienstift in Aachen . At the instigation of Frederick I, he founded the Premonstratensian Abbey of Knechtsteden west of Dormagen . Vögte von Knechtsteden were the relatives of the Sponheimers, the Counts of Are-Hochstaden .

Hugo was in 1137 on the Italian campaign of Lothar III. raised to the successor of the late Archbishop Bruno II von Berg , but died shortly after his consecration on July 1, 1137. He was buried in Bari .
