Sigewin von Are , also known as Sigewin the Pious († May 31, 1089 in Cologne ), was Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Cologne from 1078 to 1089 .

Life

Sigewin's origin and ancestry is not clear.

From 1076 he was dean of the cathedral in Cologne. In 1079 he was confirmed as Archbishop of Cologne by King Heinrich IV . He supported Henry IV in the investiture dispute . As a follower of Heinrich IV., He could barely escape the bloody turmoil in 1080 at the White Elster .

In 1083 Sigewin proclaimed the peace of God against the feuds of his time as the second bishop . In 1085 he rebuilt the burned down collegiate church Maria ad gradus, consecrated it and furnished it with various properties. On May 30, 1087, he crowned the 13-year-old Emperor's son Konrad in Aachen as King of Germany .

As one of the first German bishops, Sigewin from antipope Clement III. receive the pallium. Possibly the trigger was the fact that Pope Gregory VII commissioned the Archbishop of Magdeburg to ordain the Bishop of Minden, a Cologne suffragan.

Sigewin died on May 31, 1089 in Cologne. He was buried in Cologne Cathedral . Shortly after his death, he was given the nickname the pious .
