Life

He was a son of Count Adolf II von Berg (* around 1095; † 1160 - 1170 ) and his second wife Irmgard (?), A daughter of Engelbert von Schwarzenburg and niece of Cologne Archbishop Friedrich I von Schwarzenburg. He was a brother of Archbishop Bruno III. von Berg , a nephew of Archbishop Bruno II von Berg and an uncle of Archbishop Engelbert I of Cologne .

Belonging to the Cologne cathedral chapter, Friedrich was also provost of St. Georg in Cologne from 1140 to 1156 . 1150 elected bishop of Utrecht in a controversial election, this was by Konrad III. not accepted and Friedrich not confirmed as bishop. The bishops Albrecht I of Meißen and Otto von Freising came specially to support him in asserting himself against Hermann von Horn .

In May 1156 there was also a controversial bishopric election in Cologne. While the prior college elected the Bonn provost Gerhard von Are , the younger canons elected Friedrich von Berg as archbishop. Finally, the two parties quarreled three days before Emperor Friedrich I Barbarossa in Nuremberg, who then postponed his decision to a new day in Regensburg. Here he confirmed him as the new Archbishop of Cologne, immediately awarded him the regalia and immediately sent him to Rome for episcopal ordination, where he was confirmed by Pope Hadrian IV in 1157 .

Friedrich was considered an educated man who won the hearts of many people through his friendliness and amiability. The Xanten Book of the Dead writes about him that he was a prince of the highest humanity .

He was loyal to the Kaiser all his life and accompanied him on the second Italian train . He died there on December 15, 1158 near Pavia from the consequences of an unfortunate fall from his horse. He was buried in the Altenberg monastery .
