Johann von Metzenhausen (* 1492 in Neef on the Moselle ; † July 22, 1540 at Thannstein Castle in Alsace ), son of Heinrich von Metzenhausen . As Johann III. he was elector and archbishop of Trier from 1531 to 1540 .

Economically, organizationally and politically gifted, from 1505 he held numerous functions in the Archdiocese of Trier . On March 27, 1531, Johann von Metzenhausen was elected by the Trier cathedral chapter to succeed the late Elector Richard von Greiffenklau and consecrated bishop in 1532. As elector he fought above all the movement of the "Anabaptists" in Munster , against whom he sent electoral troops in 1534. His contact with the Schmalkaldischer Bund in 1539 earned him harsh criticism. During his reign, Johann III enlarged. owned the electorate and had numerous buildings built. Although his relationship with the city of Trier, as with other Trier electors, was extremely tense, Johann III promoted and reformed. the University of Trier . In the summer of 1540 he took part in the Hagenau Religious Discussion with Protestant princes , but fell ill during the discussions. Johann III died on July 22, 1540. von Metzenhausen suffered the consequences of his illness and was buried on July 26, 1540 in Trier Cathedral . His successor had a magnificent tomb erected in his honor in the cathedral.
