Charlotte Wessels
Johanna Charlotte Wessels (born May 13, 1987 in Zwolle ) is a Dutch singer and songwriter . She has been the lead singer of the Dutch symphonic metal band Delain since 2005 .
biography
She first played the clarinet in classical orchestras and big bands before taking an interest in singing at the age of 13. At the age of 14 she took lessons in jazz - as well as classical singing. Together with a friend, she composed songs and founded her first band with him.
Later she joined some local bands like To Elysium or Infernorama , where at the age of 17 she met Martijn Westerholt, the former keyboardist of the symphonic metal band Within Temptation . Westerholt had already founded a musical project called Delain in 2002. Charlotte Wessels decided to join this project and began writing lyrics for the debut album Lucidity , which was released in 2006. Three more albums followed, as well as tours and appearances at festivals such as Wacken Open Air , Rockharz , Summer Breeze and the Metal Female Voices Fest . The album The Human Contradiction was released on April 4, 2014. The EP Lunar Prelude was released on February 19, 2016.
Guest appearances and side projects
As a guest singer, Wessels worked with bands such as Kamelot , Serenity , Nemesea and Knight Area.
Together with Georg Neuhauser (Serenity) and Oliver Philipps ( Everon ) she created a project called Phantasma , for which she had written a novel . The musical implementation took place on the concept album The Deviant Hearts , which was released on November 20, 2015.

Her musical influences include Thom Yorke , Nick Cave and Amanda Palmer in particular .
