The Rockharz Open Air is a metal festival and has been held annually in the Harz since 1993/94 . It all started with around 100 visitors and gigs on truck trailers. Since then it has become a fixture in the annual metal festival schedule. Around 17,000 visitors were counted in 2018. The Ballenstedt airfield serves as the festival site .

A special feature of the Rockharz Open Air are the two equivalent stages, known as Rock Stage and Dark Stage , which can only be found at a few other festivals of this kind in Germany. In addition, there is no time overlap between the band performances, so it is actually possible for visitors to see each band performance.

Beginning in the 90s

The founder was originally the association Rock und Kultur am Harz eV in 1993. The Rockharz initially ran under the name "Rock gegen Rechts" and drew almost 1400 visitors to the Osterode town hall. In the following year, the festival was moved to the leisure area in Osterode- Lasfelde and thus became a real open-air event with at least 1,000 visitors. At the same time it was renamed "Rockharz Openair". Regional bands performed on a truck trailer and thus laid the foundation for the Rockharz Open Air.

A real open-air stage was built for the festival in 1996 at the latest. Bands like Guano Apes , The Atmosfear, Hungerstrike, Wasteland, Catty Caress and Tallian Gray played and the first tents were pitched. In the next year 17 bands, including Speak'n'Fish, MCDoors, Silent Hectic, Wild Thing and RAW, played in front of around 2,500 visitors - a new audience record. For the first time, entry was also required to cover the costs. The headliner in 1999 was the German alternative rock band Donots . Unfortunately, the number of visitors did not meet expectations.

In 2000, the Rockharz therefore cooperated with the European Youth Camp. On Friday there was an open-air techno disco and various breakdance groups performed. The Saturday of the camp, on the other hand, was all rock resin with bands like Eaten by Sheiks , Pussy Box and Perfect. The concept of attracting different audiences on each of the two days was also applied in the following year. So in 2001 the rock resin came up with a mixture of different styles. This time on Friday with metal bands like Flowing Tears , Die Apokalyptischen Reiter or Skyclad and on Saturday with metal and rock cover bands that copied greats like Kiss , Iron Maiden , U2 and the Beatles .

Growth through the late 2000s

From 2002 a second stage was needed for the 18 bands performing, to accommodate bands like Schandmaul , Mila Mar , End of Green and JBO . With that, the concept shifted more and more in the direction of metal , new German hardness and dark rock . Nevertheless, in 2002 there was still a metal day on Friday, among other things with several local metal bands and a Saturday with different musical orientations and bands like Schandmaul, Mila Mar and Merlons Lichter . However, care continued to be taken to support and promote regional bands by performing alongside international bands and thereby attracting a larger audience. For example, with The Atmosfear, Fear of the Dawn, Meatgrinder, Gondwania or Worst, metal bands were often booked directly from Osterode. Likewise from the wider southern Lower Saxony area, such as Elements of Change from Clausthal-Zellerfeld , Don't from Seesen , Moskote from Goslar , Skylax from Einbeck or Fading Starlight from Holzminden . The local heroes RAW also played several times on the Rockharz. Likewise the Osteroder Dark at Dawn around frontman Thorsten “Buddy” Kohlrausch, who has been involved in the organization of the Rockharz since 1998.

Audiences from all over Germany were attracted by nationally successful bands like Subway to Sally , Die Apokalyptischen Reiter , Majesty , Circle II Circle , Disbelief and Edge of Thorns . In the following years the rock resin continued to grow and in 2005 offered fans a line-up of 25 bands such as Grave Digger , Doro , Rage , Holy Moses and Uncle Tom . In 2006, the second stage, previously a tent stage, was also converted into an open-air stage. This year the rock resin was also affected by rain, storms and a cold snap with temperatures of up to 3 ° C. The concert business even had to be briefly interrupted. The solo entertainer Mambo Kurt achieved a certain cult status . He performed annually at the festival between 2005 and 2008 and often performed well-known metal songs on his home organ as a kind of opener.

Due to the enormous increase in the size of the open air, the organization was transferred from the Rock und Kultur am Harz eV association to VERUGA GmbH after the 2005 festival. The company was founded by Thorsten Kohlrausch for the festival organization, who thus became the organizer instead of the Rock und Kultur am Harz eV association. The club remained involved in Rockharz until 2009, for example by looking after the information booths and organizing five newcomer bands in the program. In 2007 some big bands like In Extremo , Kreator , Oomph! , ASP and Clawfinger added to the line-up and won new fans for the rock resin. Dark at Dawn, the band of organizer Thorsten Kohlrausch, gave their farewell concert in 2007 at the Rockharz. In the same year the Rockharz was hit again by storms, tents were destroyed and mud obstructed the spectators. In 2008 the festival was expanded to three days. Accordingly, the setlist could be expanded with a higher number of bands: 40 bands have now performed at the festival.

New venue in Ballenstedt since 2009

The size of the festival meanwhile required a new venue, as there were no suitable areas in Osterode and its districts for the ever increasing number of visitors. The long distance between the festival site in Osterode- Förste and the camping site in Osterode- Dorste , which were 4.5 km apart and connected by a shuttle bus service, also proved to be a hindrance. A new location was found in 2009 with the Ballenstedt-Harz airfield, which has both suitable terrain for extensive stage constructions and enough space for visitors' tents. In addition, larger towns are now a bit away, which minimizes complaints about noise. Unfortunately, the start at the new venue was hit by bad weather. It rained on two of the three days of the event. In the following year, however, there was a lot of heat with 40 ° C during the festival. In 2011 Rockharz was able to bring up headliners like Hypocrisy , Hammerfall or In Extremo . The audience has been so popular since 2012 that the festival has been sold out every year since then. From 2012 to 2015, in the run-up to the Rockharz Open Air, an elimination competition for young bands took place in Osterode. This competition, known as the Devil's Wall Trophy, was won by the metalcore band Five Feet High And Rising in 2012 and Furious Anger in 2013. In the following years the bands Harmann and Asenblut won the race. The winning bands thus earned themselves a slot for a gig on an afternoon at Rockharz. At the 2015 festival, the arrival situation was so unfavorable due to road construction sites and admission restrictions that there was a backlog of up to 13 km on the access roads. The organizer then presented measures to avoid this in the future. This includes the option of arriving a day earlier, the creation of a second access road, reservation of parking spaces and accelerated checks by security.

Since 2009, visitors who redeem the garbage deposit by handing in their collected garbage have received a current aerial photo poster of the Rockharz Festival. A new aerial photo is taken every year. In order to encourage potential visitors to buy tickets as early as possible, various limited early bird packages are offered, which include, for example, a DVD with compilations from the previous year's festival, posters or T-shirts with rock resin motifs.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the RockHarz had to fail completely in 2020 for the first time in its existence. The organizers have given each ticket holder the opportunity to use their 2020 ticket for the planned RockHarz 2021

Warm-up day

Starting in 2008, the band appearances were extended to Thursday, which had already served as a warm-up with a metal disco. Thursday has been the regular festival day since 2012 and instead a warm-up day will be held on the Wednesday before the festival starts on the following day. From 2013 to 2015, up to six bands each performed on their own stage, the Devil's Wall Stage . On this day, only the areas in front of this stage of the infield were opened. The Devil's Wall Stage was dismantled after that day. Since 2014, the performances on Wednesday have also been summarized as AFM Label Night, as the organizers cooperate with the independent label AFM Records and the bands performing on Wednesday are all under contract with this label. In 2016, the AFM Label Night took place directly on one of the two main stages, the Rock Stage. A third stage, which is only used for one day, was dispensed with.

organization

From its founding in 1993 to 2005, the Rockharz Open Air was organized on a voluntary basis by the Rock und Kultur am Harz eV association. The festival was then seen as too big for a purely voluntary commitment. The protection against business risks also required a new solution. That is why VERUGA GmbH (Event & Gastronomy GmbH), founded for this purpose, has been organizing the Rockharz Open Air since 2006. Around five employees are involved in organizing the festival all year round. Immediately before and during the festival, the number of employees increases to around 50. Rockharz now has 13,500 visitors (as of 2015), the campsite takes up 37 hectares and is fenced off with 4 km of construction fences (as of 2016). A total of 70 hectares are available.

Residents of the two nearest towns, Badeborn and Ballenstedt, receive discounted day tickets for Thursday from a limited contingent. In 2013 there was also a guided tour through the festival and the backstage area for interested residents of the two locations. From 2018 afternoon care for children will also be possible at the festival. This is carried out by the association "Home Moving eV".

Warm-up parties

Similar to other festivals, the Rockharz organizers try to advertise the open air with warm-up parties in the months before the annual festival in clubs in various locations. In 2011 the band Johnny Deathshadow played at a rock resin warm-up party. In 2012 warm-up parties were organized in Kiel , Hanover and Bremen , where the Excrementory Grindfuckers , among others , played. 2013 again in Kiel and Bremen, here with Orden Ogan as headliners. 2014 again in Bremen, where the Cripper performed among others . 2015 in Kiel and Goslar , here with Asenblut and 2016 in Clausthal-Zellerfeld , Oschersleben (headliner Crossplane), Knesebeck (headliner Tempest) and Kiel.

iRock network

The rock resin organizer VERUGA GmbH is an associated member of the iRock network, an innovation and sales network in the field of open air music festivals. It brings together various research institutions and companies that are active in areas relevant to music festivals such as noise measurement, logistics, management software, dispensing systems or stage constructions. At the 2012 festival, information on the network was provided at a press conference. Representatives of various companies and research institutions explained a number of key topics. In 2013, the network organized a trade fair at the Rockharz Open Air, at which various partner companies and their products were presented. Also at the 2014 festival, some companies presented their products in a small exhibition in the VIP area.

Crime and accidents

The Rockharz Open Air can be considered quite safe. At the 2011 festival, the police reported only two physical injuries, two damage to cars and the theft of an emergency power generator and ten chickens from a neighboring garden. A year later, an attempt was made to set fire to the wooden cross that was permanently installed on the Teufelsmauer, but luckily the Ballenstedt volunteer fire brigade patrolling the site was able to prevent this without causing major damage.

In 2013, a visitor was seriously injured when two young people negligently handled a liquid barbecue lighter. In the same year, a collapsed visitor to the festival died a little later in the hospital after being resuscitated on site by paramedics. In 2014, a visitor was seriously injured while handling a gas stove.

Social commitment, "happiness in cans"

The Rockharz Open Air has been cooperating with the Rotaract Club Clausthal-Zellerfeld since 2013 . The Rotaract Club is the youth organization of the international Rotary movement . Donations are collected through the “Glück in Dosen” project, where visitors can donate their beverage cans and other beverage containers with a deposit. The can deposit will then be redeemed by Rotaract at recycling partners and used to financially support various social projects in the region. Donation recipients were so z. For example, the Rueckenwind eV association, which enables children from poor Easter or families to have a warm lunch every day; The Urlaubskinder eV , which, with its KidsCamps, makes a free short break in the tent camp possible for children or for youth work by various associations directly in Ballenstedt. The wider circle of supported organizations includes the home movement association , the Christian Creativ Centrum , the school without racism project at Wolterstorff Gymnasium and the Ballenstedt airfield association ,

The team from RAC Clausthal-Zellerfeld and their helpers work on a voluntary basis on the site during the festival week, many of the helpers have been there for years and often take their private vacation during the festival. Since the beginning of the cooperation, more than 130,000 euros in donations have been collected through the deposit.
