Tankard ( English " beer mug ") is a Thrash Metal band founded in 1982 in Frankfurt am Main . The band themselves jokingly refer to their style as Alcoholic Metal due to the excessive emergence of the subject of alcohol. Due to their attachment to the fans, with whom the band likes to have a few beers after concerts , Tankard has gained a considerable fan base all over the world and performs at international festivals.

The band's producer until 2000 was Harris Johns, who produced Helloween , Sodom and Voivod , among others . Uwe "Buffo" Schnädelbach has been the band's manager since 1986. He also works as an editor for the metal magazine Rock Hard and as a music photographer.

In 1982 the band was founded under the name Vortex , later Avenger . The founding members, who had all attended the Goethe-Gymnasium in Frankfurt , decided very quickly to use the name Tankard. In 1984 and 1985 the demos Heavy Metal Vanguard and Alcoholic Metal appeared . In 1986 they released their debut album Zombie Attack on the Noise Records label. On the next album Chemical Invasion , the cover artwork was drawn for the first time by Sebastian Krüger . In 1987 Tankard went on tour for the first time. The album The Morning After (1988) became the band's first financial success. In 1989 they released the Alien EP , on which the band mascot, a green alien, is depicted for the first time.

After the release of the best-of album Hair of the Dog , the then drummer Oliver Werner left the band and was replaced by Arnulf Thunn. In 1990 Tankard gave two solidarity concerts in the GDR . Shortly thereafter, the band held a festival concert , which was also released on video under the title Open All Night . In 1990 the album The Meaning of Life was also released . The live album Fat, Ugly and Live followed a year later . Both albums sold well. In the television series Ein Fall für Zwei , the band can be seen in early 1991 in the episode Schneewalzer . On the album Stone Cold Sober was with free beer a German-language song included for the first time. Various differences led to an amicable termination of the collaboration with Arnulf at the end of 1993 after the recordings for Two-Faced had been completed. In addition to his work on the drums, Arnulf was also the composer of Space Beer , Beermuda , Stone Cold Sober , Up from Zero and Ugly Beauty , among others .

After the publication of Two-Faced , Olaf Zissel became the third drummer. 1994 appeared with refueled the first album under the name gas station attendant . In 1995 Axel Katzmann had to leave the band for health reasons. The band decided not to fill his post and moved on with just one guitarist. In the same year the band released the second Tankwart album Raspberry Spirit for Breakfast , which focused on the German hit . It contained cover versions of Dschinghis Khan , Rex Gildo and Heino, among others .

For the band's 20th anniversary, the group toured in 2002 and 2003, visiting Germany, Greece and Turkey. After that, the album was released Beast of Bourbon , to which, among other things, the Cock Sparrer- - cover We're Coming Back can be found. In May 2005, a complete concert of the band in the Batschkapp in Frankfurt was filmed and shortly afterwards the double DVD Fat, Ugly and Still (A) was released live . This DVD has a playing time of approx. 5 hours; In addition to the concert, you get an insight into the band's backstage life. There are also four video clips and an extensive picture gallery included. On April 29, 2006, one of the band's greatest dreams came true. Tankard were allowed to play the Eintracht Frankfurt anthem black and white as snow as a playback in the sold out Olympiastadion Berlin on the occasion of the DFB Cup final . This performance was repeated on August 19, 2006 in Frankfurt's Waldstadion .

Thereupon the single CD Schwarz-Weiß wie Schnee was released, which, in addition to the SGE anthem newly recorded in the studio, also contains the song Eurobbapokal and a live version of the Cock Sparrer song We're Coming Back , as well as a demo version of the title song and three other songs. The 22-minute long disc is rounded off by the video clip The Beauty and the Beast and a digicam recording of the Olympiastadion performance. Furthermore, the album The Beauty and the Beer was released in 2006 and Thirst in 2008 . On December 17, 2010 the band released their 14th album Vol (l) ume 14 , followed by the album A Girl Called Cerveza on July 27, 2012, which entered the German album charts at number 32. On June 20, 2014, the album Rest In Beer ( RIB for short ) was released.

On August 11, 2015, her drummer Olaf Zissel was hospitalized on suspicion of a stroke. As a result, he was canceled for several concerts. He was replaced by Gerd Lücking from Holy Moses .

On May 27, 2017 and May 19, 2018, the band played the Eintracht Frankfurt anthem black and white as snow for the second and third time after 2006 before a DFB Cup final at the Olympiastadion Berlin . Her latest album, One Foot in the Grave , was released on July 2nd, 2017 on the Nuclear Blast label .
