Recording and publication

The album Zombie Attack is the band's first official studio album, but this was preceded by the two demo recordings Heavy Metal Vanguard and Alcoholic Metal in 1984 and 1985 . Music and lyrics

According to Holger Stratmann, Rock Hard reviewer in 1986, the "songs are simply structured" and offer "Thrash Metal brand" full pipe "with a hard sound and a good pinch of humor." This rating is also given by Leon Fabian in the review on Powermetal. de confirmed on the occasion of the new publication in 2011. In his opinion, “you shouldn't expect any compositional-technical miracles from the album” , since at the time of its release it was “primarily about speed and energy” . In his opinion, the songs are characterized by “a certain catchiness and well-developed highlights” , “they were straightforward and full of energy, but went very quickly in the ear.” Eckart Maronde (metal.de) wrote about the sound: “With the grinding, but with agile riffs, the guitarists do not attach great importance to the 'thrashing', but rather adapt to the fast rhythms and are therefore not that far from some German Thrash Metal colleagues. There are also pretty nimble guitar solos and more than solid rhythms. "

Cover design

The cover design came from James Warhola . It shows a group of imaginary figures together with a young woman on a sofa in front of the television. These are a vampire , a werewolf , Frankenstein's monster , an ax murderer and a skeleton . The band logo is in the top right corner and the album title is on the back of the TV. The viewer is behind the television and looks at the group from the front.

The booklet contains photographs by Fred Baumgart and Uwe "Buffo" Schnädelbach .

Reviews and reception

Tankard's debut album Zombie Attack received praise shortly after its release. In the evaluation of the magazine Rock Hard (issue # 18, 1986) by Holger Stratmann, it already got 8 out of 10 possible points. He described the album as "one of the funniest and best Thrash albums by far on the market". In his view Tankard could with other bands on the scene already in the release of Zombie Attack "thick keep up" and have with the album "brought out the ideal Thrash Party wheel." Frank Trojan, also for the Rock Hard judged Zombie Attack , however, in the review of the follow-up album Chemical Invasion only as a "rather mediocre debut".

Leon Fabian awards 8.5 out of 10 points for the album when it is re-released in the review on Powermetal.de . According to his assessment, the "foundation stone for many later lyrical effusions [of the band] was laid" mainly through Alcohol and (Empty) Tankard , while he also certifies that the other songs on the album are consistently good. The band developed after its rating on this album "a truly energy, mood-and humorous thrash metal atmosphere and Gerres rough, snotty vocals are typical and characteristic of the early days of the genre." According to Eckart Maronde (metal.de) Zombie Attack sounds "very teutonic" and is "a nice bastard of speed and thrash metal."

Together with the band's second album, Chemical Invasion from 1987, Zombie Attack was reissued in 2005. Another new edition followed in 2011, 25 years after the first release, together with all studio albums that were recorded up to 1995.
