Angel Dust is a German heavy metal band from Dortmund .

history

The band was founded in 1984 by Andreas Lohrum (guitar and vocals). A year later, Dirk "Assy" Assmuth (drums), Roman "Romme" Keymer (guitar, vocals) and Frank "Banx" Bankowski (bass) joined them.

In 1986 Angel Dust released their first album "Into The Dark Past " on the Disaster Records label . Stylistically, the LP corresponds to Speed Metal and is now considered a classic.

For the second album To Dust You Will Decay , an additional singer was hired in 1988 with SL Coe. The two guitarists Lohrum and Keymer withdrew before the production because of private disagreements with the new member, Vinny Lynn and Stefan Knauer were signed as replacements. Both had previously played for Crows , to which Keymer now switched.

In 1989, the band performed as a support act for Running Wild as part of a two-week tour . This was followed by other shows and a. with Blind Guardian , Destruction , Tankard and Sodom . In 1990 Angel Dust broke up for the first time.

Seven years later, the two founding members Banx and Assy reactivated the group. For this they signed two completely new members with the singer Dirk Thurisch and the guitarist Bernd Aufermann and with Steven "Banx" Bankowski a keyboard player for the first time . In 1998 the third album Border Of Reality was released on the Century Media label with this line-up . Stylistically, not least because of Steven Banx's keyboard playing, the band was no longer oriented towards speed metal, but was now assigned to the genre of power metal .

In 1999 Angel Dust participated with an interpretation of the title The Temple of the King in the sampler Holy Dio: Tribute to Ronnie James Dio . After the albums Bleed (1999) and Enlighten The Darkness (2000) the band went u. a. with Overkill , Jag Panzer , Lefay and Steel Prophet on tour through Europe, as well as with God Forbid , Nevermore and Opeth through North America. Bernd Aufermann left the band before the USA tour and was replaced by Ritchie Wilkison, who already played for Demons & Wizards . Together with Wilkison, Angel Dust recorded the album Of Human Bondage in 2002 , before the band split up again in 2011.

In 2016 the group was invited to perform in the cast of Enlighten The Darkness at the Prog Power Festival 2017 in Atlanta . With the exception of Steven Banx, who had to cancel for private reasons, the band members took this opportunity. Boris Odenkirchen acted as a replacement for Banx.

After a Facebook page was published announcing the appearance in Atlanta, inquiries about further shows in Germany and Europe followed. Angel Dust played before the concert in Atlanta at the Bang your Head Festival (Warm Up) in Balingen and at the Metalacker Festival in Tennenbronn. After the successful US show and a few other appearances in Germany, it was decided in 2020, for the first time since 2002, to produce a new album. At the beginning of 2019, bassist Frank Banx left the band for personal reasons. A successor was found in Marc Hermann at the end of 2019.
