Christian Krumm (born January 20, 1977 in Krefeld ) is a German historian and author .

Life

Krumm studied at the Gerhard Mercator University in Duisburg and completed his master's degree in 2004 . At the now merged University of Duisburg-Essen , he did his doctorate in 2009 with Jörg Engelbrecht on the Dutch historian Johan Huizinga and his relationship with Germany. His main research interests are German-Dutch relations, the history of historiography in the 19th and 20th centuries and the national history of the Rhine-Maas region. He is co-editor of the magazine " Rhein-Maas: History, Language and Culture " .

In 2010, together with Holger Schmenk , he published the book “Kumpels in Kutten. Heavy Metal in the Ruhr Area ” , which portrays the history of the metal scene in this region. On the initiative of Schmenk and Robert Kampf, among others, he then wrote the book “Century Media. Do it yourself - The Story of a Label ” (2012), in which he reviews the founding, emergence and development of Century Media .

In 2010, Krumm was awarded the city of Krefeld's second Dante Prize (together with Tabea Kretschmann). He is also active as a drummer in the independent rock band Whikings.

In 2014 Krumm published his first novel "At Dawn They Sleep" , in which he also deals with the heavy metal scene. Basically, the story contrasts the "being normal" within everyday society with the "being different" of heavy metal fans with the main question of which emotions this type of music transports and which people feel drawn to it. The novel got a soundtrack for which 22 bands each provided one of their own songs, including established heavy metal bands such as Darkness , Crossplane , The Very End , Gloryful or Path of Golconda . Each song is related to the content of the novel and is mentioned within the story. According to Krumm, the book title, for which a song by the band Slayer was the inspiration, is emblematic for the people of the scene:

“I found the idea actually quite funny that there are actually people who are completely normal during the day, for example, wear suits, and then when they are among themselves in the evening they are allowed to be completely different. So that this metal ego sleeps during the day. "

With "Uncursed", the official biography of the death metal band Morgoth , Krumm published another book on heavy metal in 2015. The biography appeared at the same time as the Morgoth album "Ungod".

In 2016, Krumm's collection of short stories, Traumschrott , was published, which was presented for the first time on April 28, 2016 in the Krefeld Mediothek as part of a reading with the authors Luci van Org and Eusebius van den Boom, as well as the guitarist Andy Brings and the singer Sophie. At the same time, he said goodbye to his work as a "metal author" in order to devote himself almost exclusively to fiction in the future: "I just revealed all the secrets in the genre that occupied me," he said on the occasion of an interview with Rheinische Post in the run-up to the book publication.

Since the end of 2014, Krumm has also been active in the national science slam and in 2015 reached the final of the German championships, which were held in the Dortmund concert hall.

On February 20, 2019, Krumm's second novel was published with the title "Heaven 11. A Psychiatry Novel". The story of ex-banker Marc Vossberg, who works in closed psychiatry, is based on Krumm's own experience in closed psychiatry, where he worked as a nurse from 1996 to 2002.
