history

Gloryful at the Turock Open Air 2015

The idea of starting a metal band with epic lyrics called Gloryful was conceived in October 2009 by singer Christoph Süselbeck and Night in Gales guitarist Jens Basten. They produced the 3-track demo "Sedna's Revenge", which, due to its good response, led to the decision to bring the band on stage . After finding instrumental support in guitarist Vittorio Papotto, bassist Oliver Karasch and drummer Jim Sander, they completed the band line-up in summer 2010. This gave them the opportunity at an early stage to open gigs for bands such as Powerwolf , Vicious Rumors , Orden Ogan and Helstar, among others . Shortly before the studio recordings in September 2012, Jim Sander left the band in May and Hartmut Stoof, formerly at Deadsoil , succeeded him on drums. With him the debut album The Warrior's Code has now been recorded, which was released on May 24, 2013 under the label of Massacre Records . Mix and mastering made the Swedish producer Dan Swanö , the cover - artwork created by the Belgian artist Kris Verwimp The first video clip of the band for the song "The Warrior's Code" was in Helvete in Oberhausen recorded and released in June, 2013. More than 30 concerts followed, among others with Queensryche , Alpha Tiger , Bullet , Axxis , Grand Magus , Screamer and High Spirits as well as the second album Ocean Blade within 10 months . While working on the second album, it became apparent that Oliver Karasch would withdraw from the music business for family reasons . He played the bass tracks of the songs on the second album before he finally left the band. Shortly before the release of the second album, Danij Perl could be won as the new bass player for the band. Here, too, Dan Swanö mixed the sound, while this time Charles Greywolf did the mastering. In the summer of 2014, Vittorio Papotto left the band to focus on other band projects such as Exotoxis. Adrian Weiss, previously known for Thought Sphere and Forces At Work, who had previously helped out on live shows, joined the band as successor on lead guitar, and completed the band's permanent line-up. The following filming of the music video Black Legacy took place in the historical monument of the old Wilhelm Büsgen band factory in Wuppertal . The band's success story continued, followed by concerts with Accept , Hammerfall and Powerwolf , among others . The concert recordings of September 11, 2015 at the "Civilized Violence" in Club Fabrica in Bucharest , combined with battle scenes, served as the basis for the pre-release of the song This Means War from the third album End of the Night, which followed in August 2016 . Charles Greywolf was again available for mixing and mastering . Gloryful received top-class support on the violin not only in the video for the ballad End of the Night by Detlef Scherner alias Zagan by Black Messiah . A Europe - tour with shining light and Almanac in January 2017 and an appearance at the Summer Breeze 2017 in Dinkelsbühl followed. Also in the book "Kumpels in Kutten 2: Heavy Metal im Ruhrgebiet" by Christian Krumm , which was published in November 2017, the guys from Gloryful do not go unmentioned with their fourth album Cult of Sedna , mastered by Jörg Uken and a cover artwork by Axel Hermann, Gloryful was able to maintain its position in the market. The album was released on January 18, 2019 as the start of their European tour with Mob Rules and Brainstorm , in August 2019 Gloryful heated up the audience at Wacken Open Air .

concept

With their songs, the band tells mystical stories that essentially revolve around the Inuit goddess of the sea , Sedna . The first album The Warrior's Code tells of courageous metal warriors, community and struggle as well as Sedna's resurrection and her revenge. On the 2nd album, Captain McGuerkin and his crew from the ship "Ocean Blade" fight a relentless battle against the mighty sea goddess Sedna, at the end of which McGuerkin dies. The video for the ballad "Black Legacy" takes up the narrative of the second album. It shows McGuerkin below decks of his ship full of rats, keeping his logbook and navigating the seas. The band is part of the team and some even die, their dropped jaws are tied and coins for the crossing into the realm of the dead are placed on their closed lids. The third album, End of the Night , continues the story a hundred years after the sinking of the "Ocean Blade". Captain McGuerkin emerged from his wet grave on the ocean floor and, as King McGuerkin, is leading his vengeful crew into the next battle. In the fourth album, Sedna is no longer seen as a bitter enemy, but is worshiped by a desert people who hope for rain and water, whereby the previously negatively occupied figure of Sedna is now also granted positive qualities.

style

The musical style of Gloryful is mainly located between Power Metal and Heavy Metal with influences from the NWoBHM . With each new album release, the band draws on further elements of the metal spectrum. In the beginning, Gloryful was based on bands like Iron Maiden , Judas Priest , Dio , Manowar and Running Wild . In interviews and reviews, the albums are categorized as follows: The debut album The Warrior's Code follows the style of True Metal / Heavy Metal, the second album Ocean Blade that of Heavy Metal and the third album End of the Night that of Power Metal With this Album, the band is given the potential to reach dimensions like Sabaton or Powerwolf. The fourth album Cult of Sedna shows elements of heavy metal with strong elements of thrash metal and melodic power metal refrains.

The guitarist Adrian Weiss plays a TS Customs (built by TS Customs - Timo Schramm) electric guitar made for him and often uses the Phrygian-dominant scale in his solos . Singer Johnny La Bomba stands out from the spectrum of metal bands with his unusual voice.
