High Spirits is an American heavy metal band from Chicago , Illinois with influences from classic rock and the new wave of British heavy metal . It was founded in 2009 by Chris Black , who had previously appeared in the bands Nachtmystium , Pharaoh and Dawnbringer, among others . According to his own statements, he founded the band out of a “crazy idea” as a “little sideline” because he was “[bored] by the state of the local” scene ”.

history

In the founding year, Black single-handedly made two untitled demo recordings , each with four songs, which were under the label of his own underground record company Planet Metal. These demos were published in combination and supplemented by two bonus tracks in the same year under the name High Spirits , first again as a self-published CD-R and record in a neutral white cover, later also as a professional CD on Cruz del Sur Music or record on the German one Record label High Roller Records . After the 2010 single Let's Rock / Running Home , Black recorded the actual debut album Another Night , which was released the following year. Again, the first edition could only be purchased directly from him before licensed editions were again published by High Roller Records, this time on both CD and vinyl. The album got eight out of ten points on "Spiegel Online".

In addition to Black, the band consists of live members Mike Bushur, Bob Scott, Scott Hoffman and Ian Sugierski. While the former are also active together in the band Züül, the latter play in a separate band with Chris Black, namely Dawnbringer and Superchrist. The booklet of the album Another Night names "Sanford, Chris [and] Matt" as the musicians involved in the recording, but in an interview Black stated that only him is heard on Another Night .

style

The band plays heavy metal with influences from various rock and metal genres from the 1970s and 1980s. The “excellently embedded thin-lizzy double- lead attacks” and the compactness and catchiness of the compositions were emphasized . The music on Another Night has been compared to melodic new wave bands of British heavy metal like Tygers of Pan Tang , Praying Mantis , the early Iron Maiden and Tytan . Black's vocals have been described as " sounding suspiciously like Mike Tramp ".
