Nachtmystium is an American psychedelic rock / extreme metal band with musical roots in black metal . It was founded by Blake "Azentrius" Judd and Pat "Noctis" McCormick.

history

Nachtmystium was founded as a side project by Blake Judd and Pat McCormick. The band has been heavily influenced by the music of black metal bands like Darkthrone and Burzum , which is evident in their first album, Reign of the Malicious, from 2002. The second album, Demise from 2004, was described by Judd as the band's final "straight-forward-'raw-black-metal '" album. The following two albums, Eulogy IV (2004) and Instinct: Decay (2006), contained psychedelic rock and experimental musical elements previously used by bands such as Black Sabbath , The Doors and Pink Floyd . Instinct: Decay received mostly positive reviews. DEAF SPARROW Zine , praised the album for its innovations, while Decibel magazine went further and named it the fourth best album of 2006. The fourth studio album Assassins: Black Meddle, Part 1 was released on June 10, 2008 in the United States. The album was largely well received, with Pitchfork Media and MTV's Headbanger's Ball praising it as one of the best albums of the year.

Live at Hole In The Sky, 2008

The band made their first appearance in Scandinavia when they took part in the Hole in the Sky Festival in Bergen , Norway in 2008 . Nachtmystium toured with Opeth , Baroness and High on Fire on the first half of their American tour , among others . In September 2008 the band confirmed that they were working on a revised version of Demise , which should contain two additional songs. In spring 2009, Nachtmystium also announced the EP Doomsday Derelicts . The band suffered major setbacks in February and March 2009. Nachtmystium had to cancel participation in the Scion Rock Fest in Atlanta , Georgia due to claims that the band was part of the NSBM scene (see Relationship to the NSBM Scene ). Later the band had to cancel their tour with The Haunted because Judd had injured his leg.

In September 2009, Nachtmystium announced another album after Assassins: Black Meddle Part 1 , which should be called Addicts: Black Meddle, Part II . According to Judd, the album will contain new songs with “more of a rock and roll edge over all” and reflect the band's interest in the industrial and post-rock genres . The album was released on June 8, 2010. The band also performed at the Inferno Festival in Oslo on April 3, 2010 , where they shared the stage with Mayhem , Finntroll and Taake .

After imprisonment and drug problems, Blake Judd announced the official end of Nachtmystium on November 13, 2013. On August 1, 2014, however, the last album The World We Left Behind was released .

In various interviews, including in Rock Hard , Blake Judd said, however, that the band has not broken up. Shortly after these statements, however, it was announced that the record company Century Media had separated from the band because Blake Judd had withheld funds from fans for records, which he had also confirmed in an interview with Rock Hard .

style

Although Nachtmystium was heavily influenced by Norwegian Black Metal at the beginning and performed with groups like Angelcorpse , Goatwhore and Watain , Judd has stated several times that Nachtmystium should not be viewed as a Black Metal band per se. In an interview with the DEAF SPARROW Zine , Judd said: “What separates us from your average black metal band is that we're NOT a black metal band, we're a 'do-whatever-the-fuck-we-want' metal band and black metal happens to be what we build our foundation off of, if you must categorize the rhythm sections of our music ”. J. Bennet of Decibel Magazine described the band's musical style as "Blackadelia". Jason Bracelin of the Las Vegas Review Journal compared the band's latest work with Pink Floyd's and claimed, Assassins is what happens when Pink goes black” . Since the release of Assassins , the band received from the media such. B. Terrorizers and Metal Maniacs , more attention. While the band representing himself, to have removed in their development of black metal, called Carlos Ramirez of IGN .com Assassins as one of the top ten black metal albums.

Relationship to the NSBM scene

Nachtmystium's second demo recording, called Unholy Terrorist Cult , was unofficially re-released in 2001 by the American NSBM label Vinland Winds after the band had released it themselves with the imprint of Majestic Twilight Creations. Without the band's knowledge, Vinland Winds continued to produce CDs, the design of which differed significantly from the original. The band later became aware of this version, but told their own label that they didn't care, as Vinland Winds also had titles from labels that did not belong to the neo-Nazi scene. Nachtmystium's debut album, Reign of the Malicious , was recorded on Regimental Records and distributed by Unholy Records, a sub-label of Resistance Records . In 2006 Judd said:

“In the past, we've had some indirect ties to labels and bands that are part of the NS scene […] At one point not too many years ago, it wasn't uncommon for NS labels or bands to trade and work with non-politically motivated bands and labels because at the end of the day, we're all trying to promote, release, and be involved with music — all politics aside. Today it seems like there's less of a connection, at least for me and my label. We don't oppose people's right to be 'NS' or whatever — that's a personal choice, and if you live in the USA, you have the right to that opinion. Even though I personally, my band (s) and my label have absolutely no interest in being a part of that scene, I will ALWAYS take their side when it comes to their freedom of speech being imposed upon. "

On February 28, 2009, shortly before the Scion Rock Fest in Atlanta , the band was forced to cancel their participation after festival promoter and sponsor Toyota on February 23, 2009 an anonymous person said that Nachtmystium was a “Nazi -Band, ”raised concerns about the band's participation. Judd immediately published a statement from the band:

“We will be taking legal action against the people who slandered us in this situation, and in the future will file defamation / slander charges against any person or organization who attempts to prevent us from performing anywhere, especially in the United States. We are as offended by this as someone might be at the notion of a Nazi band playing a big corporate-sponsored festival. So - let it be known loud and clear for the LAST TIME, we ARE NOT a Nazi band, ARE NOT political, are certainly NOT racists and DO NOT support that world or any band, person or business affiliated with it. "

He also apologized to the Nachtmystium fans who had traveled to the festival to support the band.
