Watain is a black metal - band from Uppsala , Sweden .

biography

Watain was founded in the summer of 1998 and named after a song by the American black metal band VON . After the first demo Go Fuck Your Jewish God and the live cassette Black Metal Sacrifice , the 7 "EP The Essence of Black Purity was released in April 1999 on the Swedish label Grim Rune Productions; Watain regards it as the first official release. 2000 The debut album Rabid Death's Curse was recorded and released, and the guitarist C. Blom was released from the band, the core of which has since consisted of the other three founding members. 2001 the live cassette The Ritual Macabre and the split single The Misanthropic Ceremonies followed by the Swedish band Diabolicum .

In early 2002 Watain went on a first European tour, The Black War Tour with Unpure . In 2003 Watain recorded Casus Luciferi . The album was released during the Stellar Dimension Infernal tour through Europe with Secrets of the Moon and Averse Sefira .

In 2004 Watain went on a two-month tour with Dissection through eighteen countries.

Watain's next album, Sworn to the Dark , was released in Europe on February 21, 2007. The band then went on a European tour with Celtic Frost , Kreator and Legion of the Damned . In 2008 she played her first tour in North America.

For June 7th 2010 the band announced their fourth album Lawless Darkness with the words "On June 7th 2010, Black Metal shall be reborn"; according to Danielsson it should be a return to the roots of Black Metal with a simultaneous necessary spiritual renewal. On the album, the band's friend Selim Lemouchi from The Devil's Blood contributed two guitar solos, and Carl McCoy from Fields of the Nephilim sang on Waters of Ain . The album reached number 26 on the Swedish album charts in June 2010 . On May 4, 2012 Watain released their first DVD Opus Diaboli , which is available in combination with CDs and LPs.

In spring 2013 the band announced their fifth album The Wild Hunt with the words: "With broken bones and burning hearts we have plowed our way through deepest winter into a new wilderness, to which we will open the gates at summers end", in short followed by the EP All That May Bleed . The EP was released for the summer solstice on June 21, 2013 and the album on August 19, 2013 in Europe and on August 20, 2013 in the USA. A tour of the album will follow on August 24.

Music style and ideology

Watain plays typical Swedish black metal style and is in atmospheric terms with the album De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas by Mayhem and because of the melodies with Dissection compared. The chaos-gnostic band Ofermod , which is just as much an influence as Dissection and belongs to Watain's environment. Danielsson names old Mayhem and Burzum , Thorns , Sabbat , Mercyful Fate , Death SS , Samael and Necrovore as influences and sees many similarities with Dissection. According to Danielsson, the 2010 album Lawless Darkness is musically based more on Watain himself than on other bands.

The musicians see themselves as "part of a larger plan" and "controlled by higher powers". Their form of Satanism is expressly called devil worship by Danielsson to distinguish it from other currents ; despite their later expressed support for the chaos-Gnostic Temple of the Black Light , Danielssons help during Dissection and after the death of Dissection-founder Jon Nödtveidt dedicated to the ex-Dissection guitarist Set Teitan written, Nödtveidt and style similar to the views of MLO song Legions of the Black Light , the band kept devil worship as their focus.

The band's performances are known for the use of pig heads, fire effects and animal carcasses, as well as the extreme stench that emanates from the stage; the band itself describes parts of their performances as disturbing for numerous viewers, but enlightening and pleasing to those in whose hearts the black fire burns.

After performing at the Party.San -Metal-Open-Air in 2006, band members were seen giving the Hitler salute and wearing T-shirts of the NSBM band Absurd , which led to allegations that the band was promoting National Socialist ideas. The band then called their critics on their website as "pathetic subhumans " and Black / Death Metal as "forever not political". When Erik Danielsson was asked about the incident and his opinion on the NSBM in an interview with the German online magazine Metal.de , he said:

“People get scared when they see a black wolf invade the herd of white sheep. They automatically put a Nazi stamp on you because that seems like the only way they can deal with things they don't (want to) understand. We laughed about it and now hopefully they know better. […] NSBM is a joke, a desperate attempt by people who are unable to fathom the perversion and madness of Black Metal. They want to appear extreme and limit their conception to this type of society, which is something that could not interest us any less. Fuck the world! Black Metal has nothing to do with the world as you know it. "
