VON is a black metal band from San Francisco , California .

Band history

VON was founded in 1989. In contrast to the thrash metal bands of the San Francisco Bay Area and the technically demanding death metal bands that were predominant in the scene at the time , the band relied on short, minimalist songs and is therefore regarded as a pioneer of this style of music with an influence on the scene .

The band gave a few concerts in 1991, took the same year her Satanic Blood - Demo on and broke up in 1992 shortly after the release on. The band was known to the emerging scene in Norway at the time; Varg Vikernes had ordered tapes from the band to distribute; the band enclosed him with a 100-piece limited t-shirt, which he also wore during a court case. Even today, her fame is limited to the Black Metal underground, in which she achieved cult status. In 1992 there was a brief side project called Sixx that recorded a demo called Sister Devil , but did not publish it at the time. In 1993 Goat published a poetry magazine called Septic . Kill plays with Abscess , works in the GG all -in-one cover band Eatmyfuk and has announced a symphonic project called VWG, for which he wants to win Ihsahn von Emperor , Fenriz von Darkthrone and Varg Vikernes.

In 2003 the demo was released along with the unreleased Blood Angel demo and live recordings from 1991 by Nuclear War Now! Productions republished. In 2009 Sister Devil was released on vinyl.

In 2010 the band was reunited by Goat and Venien, Blood and J. Giblet G. came for Snake and Kill. Venien founded the side project Von Venien, Goat and J. Giblet G. also Von Goat.

Music genre

VON's songs are short, minimalistic and repetitive. The band's style is borrowed from the Nuclear War Now! Productions described as "simple but effective". The LP Sister Devil of the Sixx project can be assigned to Gothic Rock or Death Rock , whereby the drumming and the spoken passages at the beginning of the songs are unusual for these genres and the music is less harsh than in the usual death rock groups. However, the label sees the basics and the effect of the music of both groups as comparable.

The name of the band

The rumor often emerges that VON stands for "Victory Orgasm Nazi"; this is based on an article in the music magazine Kerrang! according to which Varg Vikernes allegedly claimed this in an interview. However, he later stated that he had been misunderstood and that when asked to spell the name, he replied, "V as in Victory, O as in Orgasm and N as in Nazi". When Kill, the band's bassist, was approached, he replied: "VON stands for nothing but images of darkness and blood" ("VON stands for nothing but images of darkness and blood").

Cover versions

VON's Satanic Blood was covered on Dark Funeral's debut album The Secrets of the Black Arts in 1996 and on the war EP Kill Yourself or Someone You Love in 2001 . The name of the Swedish band Watain can be traced back to the VON title of the same name and, according to the band, “can be seen as a tribute to true Black / Death Metal and the ideologies / visions on which it is originally based”. In 2005 the Norwegian tribute compilation A Norwegian HAIL to VON was released .
