Dark Funeral is a Swedish black metal - band .

Band history

The band was founded in 1993 by Lord Ahriman and David "Blackmoon" Parland . Themgoroth and Draugen joined the duo and within a year recorded a self-titled mini-CD in Dan Swano's Unisound studio . After the recording, Draugen left the band (later with Svartsyn ), his place on drums was taken over by Equimathorn.

After the band was not satisfied with the result of the recording of the debut album The Secrets of the Black Arts in the Unisound studio, the band turned to Peter Tägegren from Hypocrisy and his Abyss Studio to re-record the album. It was released in 1996 via No Fashion Records and is now considered a cult album on the Swedish black metal scene. A music video was also shot for the theme song .

The following time was marked by serious casting problems, as first Themgoroth and Equimathorn and finally even the founding member Blackmoon left the band. The latter released the first record of the band War , which he founded with IT by Abruptum and Peter Tägtgren the following year. Nevertheless, new members were found for all vacant positions. Henrik "Typhos" Ekeroth from Funeral Mist , Tomas "Alzazmon" Asklund and Masse "Emperor Magus Caligula" Broberg, the former singer of Hypocrisy, joined the band. In the following years, Emperor Magus Caligula became the most important figure in the history of the band alongside Lord Ahriman, as he brought a lot of intensity and aggressiveness to the music. The band's performances also became increasingly excessive and blasphemous , which was expressed in morbid accessories such as impaled pig's heads, blood and fire-breathing performances .

With their second album Vobiscum Satanas from 1998, Dark Funeral became Sweden's most important and influential black metal band alongside Marduk . The two bands were often compared with one another because of stylistic similarities. After the Ineffable Kings of Darkness tour, while Matti "Dominion" Mäkelä supported the band as a live bassist, Typhos and Alzazmon left the band. In their place came Dominion and Robert "Gaahnfaust" Lundin.

Tours in Latin America and Europe followed . Soon after, the band recorded the EP Teach Children to Worship Satan , which was released in late 2000 and contained cover versions of well-known Thrash and Black Metal bands such as Slayer and Mayhem in addition to the new song An Apprentice of Satan . A music video was shot for An Apprentice of Satan .

Together with Immortal , Cannibal Corpse and Deicide , Dark Funeral played the No Mercy Festival tour in the same year . After Gaahnfaust left the bands, Matte Modin became the band's new drummer.

In 2001 the band recorded their third album Diabolis interium . The tours for this album took the band to Japan , Taiwan and Singapore, among others .

In 2003 the band toured South America and recorded material for a live album, which was released in 2004 via Regain Records. It was titled De profundis clamavi ad te Domine and was recorded in the cast of Lord Ahriman, Emperor Magus Caligula, Dominion and Matte Modin.

The fourth album Attera totus sanctus was released in August 2005. Before that, the band again took part in a no-mercy tour, this time with Nile , Six Feet Under and Dying Fetus .

In spring 2007 the band separated from drummer Matte Modin due to personal differences, who was replaced by Nils "Dominator" Fjellström ( In Battle , Aeon , Chastisement, Souldrainer, Sanctification, A-Team).

On November 16, 2007, their first live DVD Attera orbis terrarum 1 was released.

The new album Angelus exuro pro eternus was released on November 18, 2009 , and the band also made a video clip for the song My Funeral . In this context, Chaq Mol mentioned that he hated gambling mistakes and therefore made sure when making the video clip that he did not make any mistakes that would be preserved for eternity.

On July 25, 2010 the band announced that Emperor Magus Caligula would leave the band after the Summer Breeze . Dominator also left the band on September 8, 2010, but returned in June 2011. Steve “Nachtgarm” Marbs has been hired as the new singer by the German dark metal band Negator . The new bass player was Tomas “Zornheym” Nilsson (Ex- Devian , Ex-Suicidal Seduction).

In 2013, Nachtgarm and Dark Funeral went their separate ways. The planned performances are to take place with his predecessor Emperor Magus Caligula. In addition, the band announced re-releases of their phonograms through Century Media .

At the end of 2014, Heljarmadr was appointed to the band as the new singer and Natt as the new bass player.

Former guitarist and co-founder of the band, David "Blackmoon" Parland, passed away on March 19, 2013. The circumstances of his death are unknown.

In February 2016 the band began recording the 6th studio album Where Shadows Forever Reign , which was released on June 3, 2016 via Century Media. Since Natt had left the band at the time, Lord Ahriman also took over the electric bass. The album also contained the song Nail Them To The Cross , which was released in late 2014 . A music video was produced for the opener Unchain My Soul .

Music style and ideology

The main musical feature is the consistently high tempo of the songs. Dark Funeral does without keyboards . The music is often referred to as monotonous; Lord Ahriman, on the other hand, argues that “the devil is in the details” and that he packs the “extreme aggression extremely melodic”, which reinforces both elements.

At the beginning the band presented itself as satanic in the sense of devil worship ; Lord Ahriman told the Ablaze : "I believe in evil , hatred and darkness and have dedicated my life to the Horned", Black Metal is a way " to honor Satan and to spread fear among Christians". Accordingly, the thematic focus in the early songs was "held in all its directness on such a socially traditional 'vulgar-satanistic' world of ideas". In the song In the Sign of the Horns, for example, Satan is "portrayed as a father figure, a ruler who lets the ruled share his power." In addition, there was the appearance of the musicians "covered over and over with pig's blood" and (probably based on Mayhem ) with pigs' heads speared on upturned crosses .

With the arrival of Emperor Magus Caligula, the texts developed from the worship of hell to the negation of Christianity . The texts became more blasphemous and aggressive, and Jesus Christ was declared an enemy. Emperor Magus Caligula writes his lyrics in the studio because he needs pressure to write. Blackmoon, who is no longer a member of the band, still describes himself as a Satanist today, but not in the orthodox, theistic sense, i.e. worshiping the devil and believing in him, but on his hatred of humanity and the biblical God as theirs Creator based. He doesn't consider himself religious. Lord Ahriman is also not a theistic Satanist, his point of view is made clear with the title of the album Diabolis interium . He himself is not a member of the Church of Satan , but has contact with some members and respects and supports their activities. He has developed his own kind of philosophy and code over the years and can find his personality in much of what CoS founder Anton Szandor LaVey spoke of.

The band uses Latin album titles, which they made mistakes. She was therefore contacted by a professor who had noticed inaccuracies and who offered to help her with future titles.

Rites of the Black Moon Webzine, July 2009, accessed on September 16, 2010 (English): “In fact, I am NOT a Satanist in the orthodox theistic sense, meaning you worship the devil and you believe in his existence. My hatred lies with humanity. So In reality, I am more of a misanthrope hating humankind, and then of course as well hating their creator - meaning God, Jehova. (according to that crap book called "The Bible"). Satan literally means fiend, adversary, and enemy, and that is what I pretty much feel myself as: an enemy of mankind. So if am actually a real "satanist" or not I do not care. but worshiping something that doesn't exist, I am sorry but I don't find it very smart. I can get attracted to dark atmospheres, evil surroundings, and a lot of Satanic things like books, films and other physical things etc. but to tell the absolute truth, I am first and foremost a musician who likes to create evil and atmospheric sounding music . I am not religious. But I have a hatred for religion and people. "
