history

2006–2008: Foundation and debut album

After leaving the Swedish black metal band Marduk , the former members Legion (vocals, also ex- ophthalamia ) and Dragutinovic (drums, also The Legion ) decided to found a new band under the name Elizium. The aim from the beginning was "to found a new band where we didn't have to work one-dimensionally, but where we could use the entire musical range," said Hagstedt in an interview with Ogerl from metalfanatics.net . Shortly after the founding, the first line-up was completed with the guitarists Joinus and Markus Lundberg (both also members of Sargatanas Reign ). Around the same time, the band renamed themselves Devian and signed a worldwide deal with Century Media .

After about a year of intensive songwriting, the band recorded their debut album Ninewinged Serpent in the Swedish Art Decay studio with producer Rickard Kottelin. The mixing of the album was done by Fredrik Nordström from Studio Fredman , who has already worked with Dimmu Borgir , Arch Enemy and At the Gates , among others . Peter In De Betou / Tailor Maid took care of the final mastering . The cover artwork was created by Greek artist Seth, who also designed the covers for Paradise Lost , Soilwork and Old Man's Child . Eventually the album was released in 2007. The response from the media and the trade press was largely very positive.

Shortly after the recordings for the debut album, Markus Lundberg left Devian again, which resulted in Tomas Nilsson switching from bass to guitar. With Roberth Karlsson a new bass player came into the band and completed the line-up again.

2008–2011: God to the Illfated , further development and dissolution

In March 2008 Devian accompanied Vader on their 25th anniversary tour as a support act across Europe. After shooting the video clip for Scarred , the band returned to the studio in summer 2008 to record the follow-up to Ninewinged Serpent , God to the Illfated . The album was released across Europe on December 12, 2008. The mixing was done by Peter Tägtgren ; It was mastered by Peter In De Betou. Shortly after the recordings of God to the Illfated Roberth Karlsson left the band and switched to Scar Symmetry . He was replaced by session bassist Carl Stjärnlöv.

In January 2009 the band toured Europe together with Deicide , Samael , Vader, Order of Ennead and The Amenta. Another tour through Sweden and Finland followed in February / March together with Belphegor , Unleashed and Diabolical. After the tour, the band turned to shooting the music video for The Assailant from the album God of the Illfated , which was released in February 2009.

Towards the end of 2009, Hagstedt announced his exit from Devian and the contract with Century Media also expired. After the search for a new label was unsuccessful, the band tried to attract attention by changing music (more heavy metal influences, clear vocals), which also remained without a positive response. This caused Jonas "Joinus" Mattson to leave Devian, whereupon the remaining members of the band broke up, since Devian would not have been the band that it started with anyway.

style

Devian's music is a mixture of Thrash and Black Metal with influences from Death Metal . Influences from Slayer , Dissection , Iron Maiden , Motörhead , Destruction and Naglfar can be seen among others . Singer Legion mentions “everything [...] that we like - for example Judas Priest , Slayer or Iron Maiden [...] as elements in the music [...] But I have never forgotten how we always hung out with Jon Nödtveidt as teenagers : It got deep Burned in as he sat on the couch and conjured incredible things out of his guitar. We all admired and envied him for his enormous talent, which he showed even before Dissection. ”As with Legions and Dragutinovics previous band Marduk, the content is influenced by Satanism , but according to Legion“ not as moving as with Marduk . The lyrics are much more thoughtful and deal with my point of view of things that I experienced during my time with the band while recording the album. "
