Order of Ennead ( Engl. , Order of Ennead ') is an American death metal band with influences from Black Metal from Tampa , Florida .

history

The band was founded in 2007 by musicians Kevin Quirion, Steve Asheim and Scott Patrick, who were previously active in the band Council of the Fallen . The second guitarist was the young John Li, a guitar student of Asheim's bandmate at Deicide , Ralph Santolla . In 2008, the self-titled debut album was released on the British record label Earache Records . The contact with Earache was made by Steve Asheim, whose main band Deicide was under contract there at the time. The album also features a new recording of three songs that had previously been written by Scott Patrick for Council of the Fallen and released on an EP . Despite the continuity in terms of personnel, music and text, the band decided on a new band name, as they hoped it would provide more stability in the band structure and better prospects for tours. The second album An Examination of Being was released again in 2010 on Earache Records.

The band announced that they will perform live with former Cannibal Corpse and Deicide guitarist Jack Owen in case John Li is unavailable due to his college engagements. Shannon Hamm (ex- Death , ex- Control Denied ) also appeared as a guest guitarist at at least one concert .

The band had their first live appearance in September 2008 as opening act for Deicide at a total of four concerts in Florida and Italy . In the following year Order of Ennead toured several times: in January together with Deicide, Vader , Samael , Devian and The Amenta under the name Winterfest through Europe, in February through the USA with Deicide, Vital Remains and Adrift. The band went on another European tour together with Vital Remains, Tribulation and Sludge in April. In August 2010, Order of Ennead played some US concerts in support of Hate Eternal and Cannabis Corpse .

style

John Li live in Paris (2009)

The band combines elements of Thrash , Death, Black, and Progressive Metal . The music is both brutal and melodic at the same time. The lyrics deal with topics that are atypical for Death and Black Metal:

"Black metal tends to be about Satan and death metal about the grotesque. That's not me. You should write about what you know and I know about myself and want to know more about the human journey. [...] My favorite lyricist would be Warrel Dane of Nevermore . "

- Kevin Quirion

In terms of music, the band also uses atypical elements, so Steve Asheim recorded several piano passages for the debut album:

"I play the paino pieces for the record. It was very much an attempt to bring other elements in to the band's repertoire and to broaden our approach to how we can make music. Can we make solo piano seems relevant to heavy metal? I think so - let's try it and see what everyone else thinks. It's maybe a risk but I'm willing to take it. "

- Steve Asheim
