Control Denied was an American progressive metal band around the death singer Chuck Schuldiner .

Band history

The band was founded in 1995 by Chuck Schuldiner as a side project next to his main band Death and was later to replace Death, as Schuldiner found the genre of Death Metal too limiting. Schuldiner was the band's guitarist , composer and arranger. The rest of the line-up changed frequently and was mostly based on the Death line-up. In addition, BC Richards was the singer, who was soon replaced by Tim Aymar (ex- Psycho Scream ). The band released the demo A Moment of Clarity in 1996 and - after The Sound of Perseverance , the officially last Death album from 1998-1999 - the album The Fragile Art of Existence , which was released on Nuclear Blast .

In May 1999, Chuck Schuldiner was diagnosed with a brain tumor, to which he succumbed on December 13, 2001. Control Denied was dormant during treatment and was dissolved after Schuldiner's death. The second album with the working title When Man And Machine Collide , which has been in the works since 2000 , was not completed. Ongoing disputes between Jane Schuldiner, the mother of Chuck Schuldiner, and the Karmageddon Media label over the rights to the existing material initially prevented the album from being completed and published regularly. After reaching an agreement with the mother in 2012, the rest of the band and music producer Jim Morris tried to finish the album. The latest update on this project took place on the band's official Facebook page in January 2014. There was talk of a lengthy conversation between Shannon Hamm and Eric Greif about the feasibility of the project, but without any concrete information on further planning steps or time objectives .

On the compilation Zero Tolerance , published by Candlelight Records in 2004, there are, in addition to some older death demos and live recordings, four unfinished demo songs of the new material with no singing.

Music genre

The musical direction of Control Denied differed from Death mainly by the clear vocals of the singer Tim Aymar , which turned away from Death Metal and sounds like Warrel Dane from Nevermore . In fact, Dane was initially intended as a singer, but declined. Schuldiner already used stylistic elements of progressive metal on the last Death albums , so that the differences weren't that big. Different riffs are also reminiscent of Death Metal.
