Candlelight Records is a London- based independent label founded by former extreme noise terrorist bassist Lee Barrett . The stylistic focus of the label is on black metal and death metal . The current roster includes bands like Obituary , Nachtmystium , Absu and 1349 . Special reputation gained the label by the publication of the first albums of Opeth , the first EP of Enslaved and the complete works of the style-defining Norwegian black metal band Emperor . The recordings of groups personally connected with Emperor such as Zyklon , Peccatum or Ihsahn were also released via Candlelight.

In addition to realizing its own productions, Candlelight has repeatedly acquired the rights to attractive back catalog titles from other phonogram manufacturers in the course of its history . In 1999 some of the albums by the renowned death rock band Christian Death from the 1980s and 1990s were re-released via Candlelight. Released in 2002 and 2003 under license from Misanthropy Records, new editions of albums by Arcturus ( Aspera hiems symfonia , La Masquerade Infernale ), Ved Buens Ende ( Written in Waters ) and Fleurety ( Min tid Skal Come ), which at the time were already classics of the avant-garde Norwegian Black Metals. In 2010 Candlelight released new editions of the entire back catalog of the Norwegian symphonic black metal band Limbonic Art .

Candlelight's subsidiary for the North American market, Candlelight Records USA, also licensed the repertoire of European labels for this territory. In 2004, for example, a license agreement was signed with the French metal label Appease Me, and in 2005 a license agreement with AFM Records from Germany.

In January 2016 it was announced that the label owners Edward Christie and Steve Beatty had sold their company shares to Spinefarm Records , whereby the label became part of the Universal Music Group .
