Manes is a band from Trondheim , Norway , who developed from black metal to experimental forms of rock and electronic music .

Band history

Beginnings

Manes was founded as a black metal band in late 1992 or early 1993 by Sargatanas (vocals) and Tor-Helge "Cern" Skei (guitars, programming, and synthesizers) . With this line-up, they released three demos between 1993 and 1995. The first two demo recordings were re-released in 1998 through Hammerheart Records . In 1999 the debut album Under ein blodraud maane was released there , a revision and resumption of many pieces that were already on the demos. After this time there was initially silence around the band until Cern was looking for new musicians for a full line-up and Sargatanas left the project in 1999.

Change of style

A contract was signed with the Italian label Code666 , on which the album Vilosophe was released in 2003 . This album marks a complete change of style: Instead of roughly produced, harsh Metal with the typical screeching vocals, the band presented itself with an innovative mixture of metal , rock , trip-hop and even with the occasional drum and bass rhythms. The singing was now exclusively clear and the basic mood changed from the occult-aggressive to the resigned-melancholic. The album was classified as "Neo Avant Metal" by the Code666 label; Manes themselves ignored this term, which they considered silly, and called their music a "dark mix of rock, metal with electronic elements".

In 2006 an EP followed, [view] , which is more of a processing of old titles from Vilosophe times. Manes said goodbye to their Code666 label. With their last album How the World Came to an End , the band moved further away from their metal roots and increasingly integrated trip-hop and electro into their compositions, which is also due to the participation of a total of 16 musicians.

resolution

At the end of 2007 the band separated from Candlelight Records , in the first quarter of 2008 Manes broke up and as a consequence removed the content of the official band website and their Myspace presence. According to Cern, it was often wrongly assumed that the band was “interested in doing everything the normal tour” (live concerts, albums, fans, fame), with other opinions being forgotten or ignored; this has "led to more and more differences internally about goals, plans and hopes". A few last publications, as well as a Manes "memorial page" should still be realized. As a new band, Cern started the kkoagulaa project .

return

In mid-2011, Manes distributed a number of new, rather unfinished pieces via Blogspot . The final breakup of the band was declared again and Cern called Sargatanas the band Manii into being, which released a black metal album in 2013. However, Manes also signed a contract with the Debemur Morti Productions label in 2013 and performed twice at the Brutal Assault Festival in 2014 . A compilation of unreleased and rare recordings, an EP and a new album of pieces that had been worked on for several years followed in the same year. Manii also released an EP in 2015 and Manes a new album in 2018.
