Blut aus Nord is a French post-black metal band.

history

The band was founded in 1993 under the name Vlad von Vindsval, he released the demos In the Mist and Yggdrasil . In 1994 the band was renamed Blood from the North to avoid confusion with the Black Legions band Vlad Tepes. In the same year WDFeld joined as a drummer, but a drum computer can always be heard on the releases.

In 1995 the debut Ultima Thulée appeared on Impure Creations Records. It is characterized by the extreme, like a "snow-white noise" distorted electric guitars as well as psychedelic , atmospheric keyboards. In 1996, Memoria vetusta 1 followed: Fathers of the Icy Age , which is the first part of a two-part concept album. Brett Buckle of The Metal Crypt wrote that it "shouldn't be missing in any black metal fan's collection". The album was also added to Rock Hard 's "250 Black Metal Albums To Know" list.

Instead of blood from the north, Vindsval is working on other projects. In 2001, instead of the expected 2nd part of Memoria vetusta, the album The Mystical Beast of Rebellion followed , which disappointed many fans because the style had changed from Black Metal to a mixture of industrial , noise and atonal sounds. This development was continued on the following albums and was largely judged positively. From MoRT the albums were released by Candlelight Records , but the band is currently under contract with the Debemur Morti Productions label .

In 2009 the 2nd part of Memoria vetusta , Dialogue with the Stars, was released . It is based on the style of the first part, but still contains dissonant elements. In 2010 What Once Was… Liber I was released with only two very long, dark pieces.

Music style and lyrics

The first two albums by Blut aus Nord were influenced by Black Metal . The "cold" electronic elements accompanying the music from The Work Which Transforms God outweigh the metal elements on MoRT , so that the music has " next to nothing, if not nothing at all, to do with Black Metal"; Chris Dick of Decibel Magazine described the style of MoRT as "sonic equivalent to Thorns injecting Streetcleaner -era Godflesh with an evil unpredictability" . From Odinist - The Destruction of Reason by Illumination , the band began to focus more on Black Metal. The musical direction in the meantime is still reflected in her music. On Memoria vetusta II: Dialogue with the Stars there is also a song called The Meditant with references to the Viking Metal phase Bathorys .

Vindsval sees Blut aus Nord as an artistic concept and distances the band from the satanic scene, which he describes as "childish satanic clowns" and "pathetic circus" . The lyrics of the band mainly contain philosophical and individualistic content, on Ultima Thulée , the two parts of Memoria vetusta , and Odinist - The Destruction of Reason by Illumination also content from Nordic mythology .
