Thorns

Thorns is a Norwegian metal band.

biography

Snorre "Blackthorn" Ruch and Marius Vold founded the black metal band Stigma Diabolicum in the summer of 1989 , which recorded a demo in the winter of the same year . In 1990 they joined with Harald Eilertsen as bassist and Bård “Faust” Eithun as drummer. Because of the increasing use of Latin names in black metal, the band renamed themselves in 1991 to Thorns. In the same year Eilertsen and Ruch took with Grymyrk the first demo released under the new name. In this early phase, Thorns and Mayhem coined the typical Norwegian Black Metal riffing , which goes back to Ruch and Mayhem guitarist Øystein “Euronymous” Aarseth and in which Fenriz von Darkthrone sees the actual beginning of “New School Black Metal”. Due to the geographical distance, the members were rarely able to rehearse. Some of the samples were recorded on cassettes. The Trøndertun demo was recorded in a studio in a school in 1992 . In the same year Ruch also began playing guitar with Mayhem, and Thorns broke up for some time. Some sources, including statements by Ruch, claim that he contributed / wrote some guitar effects on Mayhem's De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas album (e.g. for the opening sequences to the songs Cursed in Eternity and From the Dark Past ). A year later he was sentenced to eight years in prison for aiding and abetting the murder of Euronymous by Varg Vikernes .

After Snorre Ruch was released early from prison, there was a new sign of life from Thorns in 1999 in the form of an Emperor / Thorns Split CD with songs from the first demos. Thorn's first album followed two years later . In addition to Sigurd “Satyr” Wongraven ( Satyricon ) and Bjørn “Aldrahn” Dencker ( Dødheimsgard ), Mayhem drummer Jan Axel “Hellhammer” Blomberg also played on the album . This album contains influences from Industrial Metal , and in terms of content, Ruch and Thorns have been breaking completely new ground since his release, so that the band can no longer be categorized as Black Metal. According to Robert Müller from Metal Hammer , " Samoth from Emperor [...] summed it up with a remark to me: 'Snorre is as little Black Metal as you can imagine.'" On Lurkersgrave , Thorns' debut was compared to Satyricon's Rebel Extravaganza .

Snorre Ruch has been working with the artist Bjarne Melgaard for a long time ; For example, Melgaard used the Thorns song Interface to God for an exhibition and, in addition to the Emperor / Thorns split, also designed the Thorns album . He also assisted Satyr in writing the 2008 Satyricon album The Age of Nero . On September 13, 2008, Ruch announced a new album.
