Rebel Extravaganza is the fourth studio album by the Norwegian black metal band Satyricon . It was published in 1999 and was 2006 by Nuclear Blast with bonus songs from the Intermezzo - EP reissued.
Emergence
Satyr justified the long break between the release of Nemesis Divina and Rebel Extravaganza with the fact that a good album needs a lot of time for rehearsing or recording the songs.
When recording the band wanted to achieve an "organic sound", according to Satyr, several reviews in Norwegian newspapers highlighted this.
Style and content
The title describes the "musical and lyrical concept and also reflects the general attitude of Satyricon", although according to Satyr it was a spontaneous idea.
The style on Rebel Extravaganza is a departure from the previous style of the band and has influences from various other genres. Unlike on the band's previous albums, the keyboard is used very discreetly. The drums are played very precisely.
reception
The album "pushes the boundaries" of Black Metal, even if it was rejected by large parts of the scene. One reviewer praised the introduction of new ideas and complex song structures, while Allmusic's Leslie Mathew found that anyone not required to do so automatically wandered off while listening.
