Volcano is the fifth studio album by the Norwegian metal band Satyricon .
Emergence
Before recording the album, Satyricon signed a contract with the major label Capitol Records , in which John Serba from Allmusic sees no commercialization .
A video was recorded for the song Fuel for Hatred with Jonas Åkerlund .
On the promotional tour for the album played Joey Jordison as a substitute for frost in the United States drums because it got a visa.
Style and content
Satyr describes Satyricon as a "rock-oriented black metal band with a progressive touch", which Volcano shows best of all albums recorded so far. The production and the riffs are based on the previous album Rebel Extravaganza , but Volcano is more based on rock .
According to Satyr, the title Volcano best sums up the content and music of the album and otherwise has no deeper meaning.
reception
The album won several awards; It received the Spellemannprisen 2002 in the Metal Album category, an Alarm Award as “Metal Album of the Year” and for Fuel for Hatred as “Song of the Year”, as well as an Oslo Award for best album overall. It was able to place itself at number 4 on the Norwegian charts.
The album generated mixed reactions from critics. While accusations about the change of style were heard mainly from the black metal scene, Ralf from The Metal Observer praised the album as "the heaviest piece of the band history, just like the straightest" .
