Dark Medieval Times is the debut album by the Norwegian metal band Satyricon . It was released in 1993 after the band had previously released two demos, All Evil and The Forest Is My Throne .

Emergence

The album was produced by the label Moonfog Productions of the singer Satyr. All songs were composed by satyr.

Style and content

Satyr describes the production as "sharp as a razor blade". He wanted to create a “cold Nordic atmosphere” with her. One reviewer believes the album benefits "like many black metal albums" from its poor production. The riffing is reminiscent of Mayhem's and medieval melodies; it is interrupted by acoustic passages and accompanied by a flute that creates “the right atmosphere”. The album begins with a sample from the band When .

The vocals are easy to understand despite the poor production, the drumming seems confused. The style is described as " sabbath-like ". The lyrics revolve around “Forests, castles, castles in the forest, etc.”, as is common on early recordings by the band.

reception

Jason Anderson of Allmusic thinks that the album should "not be missing in any unholy record collection". According to tartareandesire.com , anyone “with a vague interest in early Black Metal” should own Dark Medieval Times . The album has been compared to Darkthrones A Blaze in the Northern Sky , Mayhems De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas, and Burzum's Hvis lyset tar oss .
