Anja Garbarek (born July 24, 1970 in Oslo , Norway ) is a Norwegian singer-songwriter and film music composer.

As the only child of saxophonist Jan Garbarek , she grew up in the Oslo area. Despite the musical environment and her enthusiasm for music, Anja Garbarek never learned an instrument, but instead tried a career as an actress.

During her time at an acting school, Anja Garbarek sang on stage in a musical performance and was discovered by representatives of the Norwegian record industry. Her debut album Velkommen inn was released in 1992 and a tour followed.

In 1997, a year after releasing their second album Balloon Mood , Garbarek moved to London and signed with Virgin Records , but didn't release the next album until 2001, called Smiling and Waving . With him she received the Spellemann Prize in the "Open Class" category.

Anja Garbarek married the English sound engineer John Mallison and had a daughter. She and her family moved back to Norway in 2003.

In 2004 she met the Icelandic musician Gísli on a tour of the studio. Enthusiastic about his music, she started working with him on a new album. She was also supported by her father.

In 2005, she composed the soundtrack for the film Angel-A by Luc Besson .

Commenting on the long pauses between two publications, Garbarek says: “Think of a painter who is preparing an exhibition. This process cannot be accelerated. It's no different with the making of an album ”.
