Theo Travis (born July 7, 1964 in Birmingham ) is a British saxophonist , active in both jazz and progressive rock .

biography

Travis graduated from flute and saxophone at the University of Manchester , and worked with Jade Warrior , Gong , Porcupine Tree , The Tangent , Bass Communion , No-Man , David Sylvian , Burnt Friedman , Anja Garbarek and Dave and Richard Sinclair together . Since 1999 he has recorded several albums with bassist Dave Sturt and various guest musicians under the band name Cipher . In 2006 he became a member of the Soft Machine Legacy (with Soft Machine musicians Hugh Hopper , John Marshall and John Etheridge ), a project that maintains and develops the music of the band Soft Machine; there he took over from the late Elton Dean . Since 2008 he has released several albums with King Crimson head Robert Fripp , which can be assigned to the ambient genre. In 2011 he played on the world tour of Steven Wilson (for his solo album Grace for Drowning ) and participated in the recordings of his third solo album The Raven That Refused to Sing (And Other Stories) and the tour that followed.

Travis' album View From the Edge was named "Best British Jazz CD of 1994" in a critic and reader poll by Jazz on CD .
