Richard Sinclair (born June 6, 1948 in Canterbury ) is a British progressive rock and fusion musician ( electric bass , vocals, guitar). He was active in various bands in the close-knit Canterbury scene , including Wilde Flowers , Caravan , Delivery , Hatfield and the North , Camel and Phil Miller's "In Cahoots".

Musical career

In the mid-1960s, Sinclair was a member of the Wilde Flowers as a guitarist and singer . Three other Wild Flowers musicians, Pye Hastings (guitar and vocals), Sinclair's cousin Dave Sinclair (keyboards) and Richard Coughlan (drums) formed the band Caravan in 1967 with bassist Dave Lawrence . Even before their first album was released in 1968, Sinclair replaced the bassist and remained a member of the band for the first four albums, including In the Land of Gray and Pink , which was released in 1971 and is considered a classic of Canterbury's progressive rock style.

In 1972, after the release of the fourth Caravan album Waterloo Lily , Sinclair left the band and joined the reunited band Delivery with guitarist Phil Miller , keyboardist Steve Miller and drummer Pip Pyle . A little later Dave Stewart took over the keyboard part, and the band renamed itself Hatfield and the North and released two albums until they broke up in 1975.

From 1975 to 1976 Sinclair led his own band called "Sinclair and the South" - the changing line-ups included Dave Sinclair, violinist Dave Arbus , drummer Bill Bruford and guitarist Mark Hewins.

In 1977 Sinclair joined the band Camel at the request of drummer Andy Ward and took part in a concert tour and the recording of two studio albums.

In 1981 he recorded the album Before a Word is Said with Phil Miller, keyboardist Alan Gowen (of Gilgamesh and National Health ) and drummer Trevor Tomkins . In the same year he became a founding member of Phil Miller's band "In Cahoots".

In 1992 Sinclair founded the band "Richard Sinclair's Caravan of Dreams" with Dave Sinclair, Andy Ward and Rick Biddulph, which released two albums.

In 2005 and 2006 he participated in the reunions of Hatfield and the North; Pip Pyle died unexpectedly during their concert tour in 2006, and Mark Fletcher took over his place on drums.
