Phil Miller (born January 22, 1949 in Barnet , Hertfordshire ; † October 18, 2017 ) was a British fusion and progressive rock guitarist who was active in various bands on the Canterbury scene .

Musical career

Miller received his first guitar at the age of eight. It was only at the age of 15 that he developed an interest in the instrument and taught himself how to play. With his brother Steve Miller , who played the piano , he formed his first band in 1966 with drummer Pip Pyle and bassist Jack Monck. This blues band changed in 1968 to delivery ; this now also included saxophonist Lol Coxhill and singer Carol Grimes . In 1969 Miller began to write his own songs and contributed them to the debut album Fools Meeting . 1970 emerged from the band after a line-up Dyble / Coxhill & Miller Brothers . After the dissolution of the band in 1971, he was a founding member of Robert Wyatt's formation Matching Mole , for which he composed equally. After its dissolution, a delivery reunited with the participation of Miller was merged into the founding of Hatfield and the North in 1972 , after which, after the provisional dissolution, National Health was again created, also with the participation of Miller.

After the break with National Health Miller played partly in a duo with guitarist Phil Lee , otherwise in a trio with brother Steve and Coxhill. In 1982 Miller founded his band In Cahoots (with Fred T. Baker and Pete Lemer ), which has been his main interest ever since; In 1988 Phil Miller's In Cahoots included Elton Dean , Steve Franklin , Fred Thelonious Baker and Pip Pyle. With Baker he also appeared in a duo; In 1991 he played with Hugh Hopper , Didier Malherbe and Pip Pyle in the formation Short Wave ; from 2005 "Hatfield and the North" were active again.
