Elton Dean

Elton Dean (born October 28, 1945 in Nottingham , England , † February 7, 2006 in London ) was a British jazz musician. He played the saxophone , saxello (a variant of the soprano saxophone ) and occasionally piano .

Life

Dean was a member of the band Bluesology from 1966 to 1967 , led by Long John Baldry . The pianist of this band, Reginald Dwight , combined Dean and Baldry's first names into his stage name: Elton John .

Dean established his reputation as an excellent fusion musician as a member of the Keith Tippett Sextet from 1968 to 1970 and in the band Soft Machine from 1969 to 1972. Shortly before he left Soft Machine , he formed his own group, Just Us . From 1975 to 1978 he led the band Ninesense . He has also worked on projects with guitarist Phil Miller ( In Cahoots ), drummer Pip Pyle ( Equipe Out ) and bassist Hugh Hopper, and played in Chris McGregor's Brotherhood of Breath and with Carla Bley's band . In the early 1990s he was a member of the Dedication Orchestra .

Since 1999 he has toured with former Soft Machine members Hugh Hopper , John Marshall , Keith Tippett , Allan Holdsworth and John Etheridge under the names Soft Ware , Soft Works and The Soft Machine Legacy . In addition, Dean and Hopper founded the group "Soft Bounds" in 2003 with Sophia Domancich and Simon Goubert ; he also starred in Alex Maguire's Psychic Warrior .
