Lol Coxhill
George Lowen Coxhill (born September 19, 1932 in Portsmouth , England - † July 9, 2012 ) was a British jazz saxophonist and actor .
Career
Coxhill learned to play the saxophone in private lessons and completed a bookbinding training. He first played in amateur bands rhythm and blues and became a professional musician in 1954. He then worked with Tubby Hayes , Joe Harriott and Mose Allison as well as in the blues area with Otis Spann , Steve Miller , Champion Jack Dupree , Lowell Fulson , Rufus Thomas and Alexis Korner . He also performed solo and since the mid-1970s has increasingly worked with musicians such as Harry Miller , Steve Lacy , Evan Parker , Anthony Braxton , John Stevens and the Spontaneous Music Ensemble , Stan Tracey , Franz Koglmann or Achim Knispel .
In the early 1980s he was in the trio The Melody Four with Steve Beresford and Tony Coe , later with the trio The Recedents and the large formation Before My Time and Louis Moholo's Dedication Orchestra . In addition, duos with Pat Thomas , Misha Mengelberg and Veryan Weston have emerged . He also did street theater and worked in the performance scene as well as in films such as Frog Dance , Sally Potters Orlando and Caravaggio . In addition, Coxhill played with the punk group The Damned and worked in projects by Penny Rimbaud , Morgan Fisher and Hugh Hopper as well as a guest musician with techno bands such as Ultramarine and 46000 Fibers . His Digswell Duets (with Simon Emmerson and Veryan Weston) in 1998 in the list "100 Records That Set the World on Fire (While No One What Listening)" by The Wire added. In 2013 the album Sitting on Your Stairs (Emanem), recorded with Michel Doneda , was released posthumously .
